How long has the tank been setup? Your tank will go threw a serious of algae outbreaks within the first year, you can run phosban and it will help get rid of phosphates that fuel algae.

Brown algae will cycle out in a few weeks... That is the first algae outbreak and it will cover almost everything!

Your tank is prob. just going through a cycle period. i would do small water changes to help with it. It should go away on it's own. Snails/hermits will help......

If the tank is new, probably just diatoms. Don't be surprised by a green hair algae bloom after the diatoms go away. If you aren't already, use RO/DI water if at all possible. ;)
Need to know a bit more about the tank and how long it's been set up to properly identify.

The tank is 125 gallon reef and has only been set up for a couple weeks but the sand and 40% of the water came from an existing reef tank.
