hi, i bought a red monti (3.5") about a week ago for $25.00. LFS said: "it had been bleached from 400W MH". it was redish/brownish in color. the past two days, its started growing light green tips. is it dying or maybe a different color then the red it was supposed to be? i have it about a foot or more from an "Outer Orbit" 150W MH-14K, 2XPC-96W 03 Actincs and 2X96W PC-7100K and 03. any info would be appreciated, thanx in advance:)

monti caps should not be to close to the light,so bleaching can happen from 400w,150 is nice and the green polyps is most likely its true color.if you can post a pic.oh by the why i browned a purple cap for having it to close to 250w,i moved it down further down and its starting to come around.

i can place it on another rock about 8" lower. i might do that in the morning. i have it about 6" below an acro now. when i place it, its gonna be permanent where growth is optimal.
as far as the color, thats pretty much what i thought. red montis 3.5" for $25.00 is cheap in Tennessee LFS. theyre usuallly about $75.00 for one that size thats healthy. thanx again:)

np,wish i could get my hands on a frag of that.
I have my red cap at the top of my tank and it's growing like crazy and is a deep blood red. Be carefull when it gets too big it will kill any acro.

ade, will move it for sure today!.....done!!!... he is now about 18" dead center below MH, which gives it more of the O-3 and 7100K lighting also. i have a 10K and a 20K spare MH. should i leave the 14K in for now? or permanently?
the acro (4"X 3.5") is about 5" back from center of the MH, and appx. 4" below surface which leaves 9.5" from the MH. its traped in the crevice of branching Fiji, and can be moved when needed.
thoughts? suggestions, comments are very welcome. these are my second try at SPS. ice storm killed the last ones of 3 years, so i went LPS, paly, zoa, and softies for about 9 years now.
i have the flow adjusted to hopefully deter any chemical warfare.

You know for a while I placed mine on the bottom of my tank with very little growth. The same frag in my friends tank grew 3 times faster with his 250's 10,000k xms and he placed it at the top. So I moved mine and within a month or so I saw results. Like I said mine is a deep red where my friends is more of a pink.
IMO if you like the look of 14k's and the polyp are out on the cap it is happy. It's a crap shoot sometimes. The same coral, different colors. IMO the differance in water quality lighting and suppliment.
In all I think that you got a great deal for a frag of that size.
Good luck.

thanx ade! thats the one reason i purchase it. that and the one more shot at SPS. im going today to get my Salifert Iodide kit and the Strontium kit. (they came in yesterday) im gonna keep my babies healthy so they grow up big and strong. im sure i will check the frag tank while im there. they use 250 X 14K on theirs only. no O-3's or any other lighting. they keep them about 2 feet above the tank, photoperiod of 10 hrs. daily. well, gotta go to the Dr. and hit the LFS afterwards. ill be back on sometime this afternooon. thanx for the info, cross the fingers.
