View Full Version : What is the coolest fish in your reef tank?

What is the fish that non-reef people see when they look at your tank and say WOW THAT IS SO COOL! I think as someone in the hobby I tend to see fish I know are rare and expensive and say wow. However people that don’t know the value of the fish tend to choose a fish solely on what they find the most interesting. So share what fish wows people the most when looking at your tank.

I will start, people just love my Saddle Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini). He is a very cool fish with lots of personality. I am missing a few hermits but so far he is worth it. Your turn :)

Everyone who comes over (reefers and non-reefers) all ooh and ahh over my ruby head fairy wrasse (c. cyanopleura). Not expensive at all.

People always talk about my supermale Rhomboid fairy wrasse plus the exclamations of "Dori!" from the younger ones on my 2 Regal Tangs.

Got this little one on 1/21/06 from liveaquaria. Still going strong - eats like a pig with my large angels and tangs.

Yeah, I doubt that anyone could pass on commenting on a Moorish Idol. I think they are the epitome of fish that inspire saltwater tanks. Too bad about their survivability.

The fish that non-reefers always seem to notice in my tank are my flame angel, purple tang, and the male lyretail anthia. The flame angel seems to get the most commentary though. His bright orange and lots of movement seem to make him really stand out.
My black occelaris also seems to get a lot of commentary from non-reefers. Mostly along the lines of "What's wrong with you clownfish? I thought they were supposed to be orange...." I have one friend who likes to play "Finding Negro" when he comes over.

My crosshatch trigger seems to draw some attention.

Mated pair of true percula clownfish. You gotta love the way the swim, stay together, come to you during feeding, are peaceful and it's easier to explain reefing when you can tell people that your reeftank has 'nemos' in it.:D

My supermale lineatus, and Big male flame wrasse seem to get alot of attention. My new flasher gets alot of attention too. He is extremely rare and active.

Sorry for the bad pic of him

do you happen to have a picture of your orange shoulder? I want to add one to my reef and i hear they are pretty calm and nice and hardy

anyways mine would probably be my midas blenny (kamikaze, named by my girlfriend because he is pretty crazy) or my bluethroat trigger pair that never leave eachothers side and seem to play hide and seek with eachother

Thanks man. I remember seeing a pic of one in a book years ago, and thinking "that fish would be awesome. Too bad I'll never see one for sale." When I did, I almost soiled myself, and RAN to get my credit card. Has been an awesome fish so far.

It is funny that you started this thread. We have a 400 gallon with about 35 fish. We ask everyone who comes over what is their favorite fish. Nobody picks just one fish. Here are the ones that get the most replys.

Labouti and Solar fairy wrasses
Trio of anthias
12 inch Vlamingi tang
Horned Blenny
Princess Parrotfish
Blonde Naso

people seem to like my flame angel, great colors and very active. i also get a lot of comments on my scooter dragonet. it might change, though. i got a midas blenny 2 weeks ago, and it is already one of my favorites. neat way of swimming and already very personable.

my favorite is my clownfish, i love that little guy

My coolest fish is my male lyretail anthias, since I got to watch him change from female to male in my tank. My PBT is close second for graphic colors.

Hey nitro, your bartlett looks good. Did at least 2 of the three get along?

t5Nitro
04/24/2007, 10:15 PM
Ya, 2 of 3 get along. There is still 'no-tail' in the tank. I was thinking of taking that 1 bartlett out and put it into the 46 gallon for a while, but as you can see in the picture I put 2 tangs in there today, so I think that the anthias have more to worry about now. They use to think they were the big dogs :D

Its funny...I've never seen one of these, or even heard of them, before I saw your picture yesterday. This morning I was strolling around one of the LFS here and...they have about five of them! They seemed kind of pale, but otherwise were very active. Quite large though, and fairly expensive...
