I currently have a 20 gal with about 30 pounds of live rock and a 1 to 2" sand bed. The live stock consist of a tomato clown, bicolor blenny and skunk cleaner shrimp along with a couple hermits and snails. I have some xenia, mushrooms and Zoas as well. I have 2 x 24" Power compacts for my lights, a 200 gph power head for circulation in the tank and a penguin bio wheel HOB filter. Tanks has been setup for almost a year now. The clown is attached to the xenia and likes to lay flat against the stalks at night.

I have read that the bio wheels are nitrite factories and since my HOB filter is starting to stop running at times and will need to be replaced. I was thinking of getting rid of it and replacing with a HOB skimmer.

Would this work? Or will I still need supplemental biological filtering?

Thanks

You can chuck the bio-wheel. They do contribute to nitrate issues in most cases. You have plenty live rock in the tank to support the bio load, no problem. I would recommend a skimmer in any event. There are a few hob skimmers that are ok for smaller tanks. I use an AquaC Remora that is fine for my needs. The Deltec MCE300 is also good. Tunze DOC skimmers are great, but are internal. ;)
