Why do some ppl put foam between the tank and the sand???

I have seen some ppl put styrafoam between the tank and the stand. Ie the tank sits on top of the foam. What is the reason for it?

It helps to cushion the stand against any uneven portions of the stand that could cause stress on the tank.

Most people do it with acrylic tanks, not so many with glass because glass usually has trim around it. Also to keep it level.
