View Full Version : Purple Chaeto??

I'm growing some chaeto in a 10 gallon tank. Started out with about a cup full from the LFS of what appeared to be a bright shiny dark green chaeto.

As it's grown in the past couple of months, it started getting some purple in it (a few spots here and there), and also several "pieces" of the purple have "broken off" and are growing around in the tank in various places.

I was thinking I read somewhere that this is not such a good strain of chaeto (or is it even chaeto)?

Just wondering is anyone has any thoughts on what it might be? If I should just leave it to grow? Get rid of the purple? Grow the purple seperately?

I have a good bunch of mini starfish, copepods, and amphipods all growing in it, so it doesn't seem to be harmful to anything.

chaeto is green viney stuff that puts out runners. anything red is a different algae.

This is a red/purplish growth, that started growing "as part" of the chaeto that I bought. It's not coraline algae...it's not nearly as thick or viney as chaeto....it's a very thin almost "fuzzy" looking type of stuff.
