When the water level is low the pump pulls in a ton of air and there are a ton of bubbles. However, when I try to raise the water level the bubble production slows down to almost nothing. I have the skimmer gravity fed and cleaned the pump, yet this is still happening. It used to not do this at all. Any suggestions?

Take the impeller out of the pump, soak in 100% vinegar overnight. Make sure to seperate the shaft from the impeller. Take a scotchbrite pad and scrub the shaft. Then run a pipe cleaner thru the inside the impeller shaft. Do this before and after soaking the impeller. It is an indication of calcium build-up on the impeller shaft and or bearings.

Thanks Brian. Skimmer is working great today. I've forgotten how much bubbles it produces when fully clean. How often should I be cleaning the impeller and shaft?

I would generally give the pump a good cleaning about every 3 to 4 months and it will keep it at peak performance. The lower the dkh, the longer between cleaning time. The higher dkh, the more frequent cleaning is required.

david, i've noticed this happening on my skimmer also, but mine has barely been set up for a month.
i can see my bubble production slowing down allot if i try to raise the water level into the the neck of the collection cup.

I think another cause of my problem was decreased flow to the skimmer due to teeing off the pipe to feed my CA Rx. I just recently increased the flow to the skimmer and noticed some improvement.
