I am thinking of running one of these externally on a small closed-loop. Good choice? Are they quiet?

We tried one briefly on a closed loop and and it was anything but a "Quiet One"... We ended up swapping it out for a MAG with much more quiet results.

I ran a 3000 - it died after 2 weeks.

I based mine on Melev’s Closed Loop design using the Quiet One 4000. IME it is not noisy. I have however had to replace the ceramic shaft. You have to twist the cap off at the impellor housing and I twisted and pulled to hard causing it to break. Mine has been running for about 10 months. To be fair I have a MAG 7 for my skimmer and it is very quiet too.
