Is the Fiji Blue Lined Rabbitfish (Siganus doliatus) reef safe? I like the fish but I have a mixed reef with LPS and Softies including Xenia. Anybody any experience with this fish?

The fish store i go to has had one in their display tank with LPS and SPS for a number of years. I have a Siganus Tetrazonous in mine and it doesn't bother corals.

I think these are also known as scribbled rabbitfish and if so then it depends on the fish. I have one in a 75 gal mixed tank and I have never had any trouble. No nibbling, gets along great with tank mates and eats like a pig. Mine has a great personality and loves to get in the high flow areas and swim against the current. He is always out and very personable. However there are those who have had a problem with them nibbling on softies. If you choose to get one just watch it closely. Also, in case you didn't know, they have a venomous dorsal fin so be careful when handling.

Doliatus have been known to eat corals.

i had a scribbled rabbit that took after green frogspawn and hammer once the algae ran out. He has a ferocious appetite and eats non-stop. I couldn't feed him enough.

Ive had 4 different siganus doliatus previously in different tanks and i got another one last week as I had a casualty the week before. Never had any problems with any of them.

This last one is a PROBLEM. He has decimated 2 entire zoanthid colonies so far worth at least $150. I dont know how im going to get him out to be honest. Hes in a fully stocked 225 and wont eat anything I offer but pick at invisible algae on the rocks and tear zoas apart. Trapping him isnt an option nor is waving a net around with the top fo the reef covered in stonies.

Weird thing is is that as he has destroyed the colonies so far he has meticulously done them one at a time until they are gone, not touching any others in between and hes got about 30 other zoanthid colonies to choose from.

:(

Im going to have to get him out one way or another in the next couple of days.........this cant go on.

I have one, and I havent seen any major problems, but I have lost some small zoanthids I introduce. I never saw him eating them so I can't say for sure. I have 9 other kinds that are flourishing though, so I can't really label him as a zoa eater.

Overall I would say mine is safe.

Thanks for the replies. Any other opinion out there? Looks like you need some degree of luck and hope your fish won't nip.
