I have the chance to get a brand spankin new Iwaki MD100RLT for $175. Is it worth it? Anyone have problems w/ this pump? Are the fittings standard?

What do you think?

...LOUD... But if you have a fish room or basement, no problem. Good pump.

Excellent and very long lasting pump but as all external pressure rated pumps a bit noisy for a stand.

Thanks guys. I will be using the pump is some propogation tanks in the basement, so noise is not an issue. So do you think the price is right on this one?

It's a good price...I have the Japanese motor 100 and loud, yes,---your basement will sound like the Seattle Aquarium's pump room; also don't let anyone with long hair work near it: it sucks hair in so fast--- But my lfs guy says his have worked 10 years with no glitch.

Cool. Any ideas on what makes this pump so loud. Anyone hear of any mods to quiet it down some if its too awful noisy, besides sticking it in a box that is.

Not much you can do about the noise, it is associated with the need for high discharge pressure and the required RPM.
Use flexible hoses on the inlet and outlet and mount it on a rubber pad.

Cool. It comes w/ a few lengths of spa-flex hose from the guy selling it to me.

i would mount it on a nice board if possible ( like 10'' x 12'' then stick 2 mouse pads under that.. as for the noise.. it could be plenty of things.. from the fan to the nigh water flow .. and about sticking it into a padded box.. well it would help with the noise but will bring another problem... heat.. cuzz you just rid of it's cooling device ( fan air circulation) and added a heat insulator... the 2 best things i can think of it the board and to have a 12'' minimal peice of them clear vynle tubes from HD (cuzz it's more flexible and absorb the vibration more) then you can connect it whatever

I'll be sure to. I saw this add on Craigslist for a 100gl rubbermaid sump, Iwaki pump, some skimmer I never heard of, and a 1 1/2hp chiller + a bunch of misc stuff for like $400. I figure I can't go wrong.

Oh yeah and a drilled 40gl long tank w/ spray bars.

By the way what will you use the pump for and waht are your flow needs and planned installation?

I dunno. I know that I will find a use for it. I'm still in the early planning phase. This includes demolition of non load bearing walls and running electric. I'm thinking of building a few tables that will hold a series of tanks that will drain into a main sump and be fed by a spray bar. Not sure exactly yet, but I'm getting there.

That pump is a pressure rated one capable of pumping a max head of 38 feet and a little over 2000 gph. 1/3 HP

if it was me i would do lfs type thing.. stacked with about 2' in between to beable to get into the tanks.. lit by t5ho.. the iwaki would be the return from the sump that all the tanks dump into.. circulation for the tanks would be a MJ MOD or the likes...

Mine pumps from my basement up and over a bit to a tank in my living room, and it has no end of flow. Has a 1" diameter outflow and would like an inch and a half downflow if you can find the pipe that suits and get it mated to the tank: most of my installation headaches involved trying to get my tank fittings and my pump fittings to connect via adapters. It's just close enough in inner diameter that finding adapters requires a hardware store with a lot of selection.

another idea i had if cooling is needed for the tanks since they are stacked, you can semi seal the tanks off from the outside room via a bord that slides or plastif n velcro or whatever.. you would seal the 2' area that is above the tank off.. if you place a few next and above each other then you would seal them off in 'searies' like.. then at one end you would built a 'return' as we call it in a HVAC system.. then add a blower blowing out.. this will pull a constant air stream over the tanks.. and air cooling it as to say.. think 'computer tower' of course the back end has to be open to allow negative pressure to pull 'fresh air' in.. if humidity is a problem then you can vent it outside.. if you elecric bill ( for Ac) is a problem then get it so that ouside air is sucked into the thing and blown back out.. kinda like a seld system to the outside.

Well I talked to the guy this morning, and I'm getting the pump and the other stuff mentioned. This will include a 1 1/2hp chiller. I doubt I will use it, but you never know. If nothing else, I could sell it and make a few bucks.
