Just got a new Mag drive, It comes with a huge pre filter. Do I really need it. My present pump when I turn it off to feed the fish kicks all the crap out of the pre-filter into the tank when turned back on. Whats the suggestion here, I don't want to ruin my new pump.

you can use the filter as a water polisher of sorts and to keep any big debree from geting sucked into your pump. the problem is that sponges need to be rinsed frequently to keep all of the stuff from blowing back into your tank when you start pump back up and they will become a nitrate factory. I wouldn't. The only things I use a prefilter on are my calcium reactor and Phosban Reactor to help keep the crud out of the media and internal sponge disks.
