I am tired of my H.O.T. Remora w/ Mag 5 and have decided to go with either a 9005 or 9010 that will be used inside the tank. My concerns with my Remora, hopefully will be no problems:

My biggest concern is the noise of the tunze? Will it be loud? My tank is in my living room and about 1' from my L couch. I know the quality in the skimmate will be there because tunze's rep speaks for itself, but I am hoping that I will not hear more than what I would hear from my aquaclear 70 that runs carbon. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I had the Remora, and now have the Deltec MCE600 and a Tunze Reefpack 500(9005 skimmer). Let me say that I can now run my skimmer all night and my wife doesn't even realize it. She had me shut off the Remora every night at 11pm so she could sleep.
I got the Deltec hoping it was a bit stronger and a bit quite, but it was definitely stronger, but noise wise it wasn't an improvement. I still had to shut it off every night.
Now I have the 9005 on the tank and it is the quietest skimmer I've owned, and while it isn't collecting the dark thick skimmate Deltec was getting, it gets a dark wet skim and does an excellent job.

I havea 9010 skimmer and it is very quiet. I used to have my tank in my bedroom and I had no problem sleeping. I am quite sensitive to noise. I hope this helps.

It's quiet. The computer fan cooling the lights over the tank drowns out the sound of the 9010 I am running.

it's not like it's dead silent, but it's pretty quite. It makes a very faint rumble, but it's rythmic and tolerable :)

My 9005 is quite quiet.

I personally would get the 9010 over the 9005. Give you a little more room for upgrading to larger tank and can add the foam extraction kit sometime in the future to get a little more capacity out of it as a little less maintenance.

I'd also get the magnet option for vs. using the brackets.

Compared to the ASM It replaced it's way quieter but not silent. I don't hear any air slurping noises but do hear some vibrations ( running in insump mode ).

Quiet and effective. Had Aqua C EV120 and Deltec MCE600 - this one beats them both hands down IME.

I vote for the magnet mount too, love it, and for a 55 I would go for the 9010. My 9005 is perfect for my 37, but if the tank was any bigger I'd want the 9010.

When my 9010 is mounted on the back, there is a very slight vibration from the pump and a slight air injection sound. Very little though and nowhere close to any other skimmer noise I have owned.

I imagine the magnet mount would eliminate that vibration. Mine is competely silent in the sump set up, inside the cabinet.

I second the suggestion to get the 9010 which I believe is a stronger skimmer (and just as quiet). The 9005 is for in-aquarium use whereas the 9010 can be configured for either in-aquarium or in-sump use. If you buy the sump kit for the 9005, you are paying almost as much as you would for the 9010.

To make the purchase of a 9010 more affordable, check for retailers that will offer free shipping for purchases above a certain amount. I believe that free shipping may be available here: http://www.aquacave.com/TunzeDOCProteinSkimmers.aspx

I went from the Remora HOB to the Tunze 9010. It is very silent! The only time it makes noise is when the water level is too high. That noise is loud. If you set it up right, the noise will be next to none.
