I can never get vinyl hose all the way onto the barb. How do you do it? I usually end up buying a larger diameter hose and using hose clamps.

Soak the end of the hose in hot water for a few minutes, it will go on much easier.

Or use a hair dryer. The heat will make the hose more pliable so you can get it on.

When I have tried heating it (heat gun and hot water methods) the entire hose get too pliable to push onto the barb.

Use some heat just enough to soften it and use a bit of silicon grease on the fitting, this will make the hose a bit easier to take out when the need arises.

I have always used a cup of water boiled in the microwave...
just set the end in the water for 30 seconds...slips all the way to the fitting. As it cools it grabs on like a ...well you know.

I just run some water through the coffee machine and it comes out almost boiling instantly :)

Once you soften the hose you can do just about anything with it. In a pinch you can actually connect hoses by overlapping them ... well for siphoning anyway.

A quick dip should soften it a bit ... I think everyone agrees to that. Sometimes it just takes some old fashioned UMPH to get it on there.

Are you sure the hose and barb is the proper size?

If I buy a 1/2" barb I use 1/2" ID tubing.

You don't mean the spa-flex white tubing do you? If so, that's ot designed to go onto a barb. It's supposed to be glued into a fitting just like rigid PVC.

Flexible PVC (smooth inside) can be used with insert adapters. Spa-Flex, the corrugated one will need special end connectors that screw into the ripples and gets glued with special sealand (similar to the hot glues)

I will think that a small amount will not do much harm other than potentially preventing the skimmer from bubbling properly for a while.

You're using fittings and hose with the same ID. The vynil hose has to have a bigger ID to get somewhat closer to the OD of the barbed fitting. I haven't used 1/2 inch anything in years, but a good guess is that the vynil hose should have at least a 5/8" ID but not much bigger or you'll really be depending on those hose clamps. You'll still have to heat and lube as suggested, but you'll have a much easier time of it. And you'll have plenty of KY left to keep in your toolbox too, lol!
