I painted my canopy tops and stand flat BLACK today, and I think that they turned out pretty sleek looking. I like it a lot better than the stained wood they used to be!

Do you like the black better? I couldn't stand the high sheen on the stained wood. It looked too Brady Bunch!

There's no background, that's just the light bouncing off the wall. Bright BLUE ones! With the whole black combination, it really makes things *PoP!*

The black looks great. A lot better than the wood, imo. I liked the design the first time I saw them, very unique. The tank looks great btw. :)

Thanks drummereef! I like the black a lot better too. It's funny because the first time that I put the canopy top pics up, someone made the suggestion (sorry, I can't remember who) that they would paint it all black. Ever since then, the thought stuck in my head.

The tank is doing well, and this hobby as a whole captivates me! Speaking of that, I need to go feed the little guys...See ya!

i really like the large/small tanks side by side, i dont know if you did that for plumbing purposes or what, but its cool. it made me think about what it might look like if someone did maybe 3 side by side cubes, with each being progressively taller. then i thought about a cingular commercial.
but seriously, the black looks awesome, and now i am considering doing a pair of small/large tanks when i get a new place and of course the $.

I am a professional renovator, so I have to ask...were you well informed and picked out a scrubbable flat black? If not, you might as well re-paint it now! Flat paint is horrible...you're going to get finger prints, salt marks, etc. A scrubbable flat black (like Mill's Legacy) is at least washable.

But dang it looks good in the photos! :D

Hope this isn't a dumb question but here goes... Did you paint the stand with the tank still on it? I have a classic 80's oak stand and canopy that I'd like to paint black but the thought of tearing down the tank keeps me from doing it. Yours looks great.

I have never owned a tank with wood trim or a stained stand. I always go for black. I never understood why people thought wood looks good. To me it always looks old and outdated. Black looks sleek and modern. It definantly looks much better.

I would put backgrounds on them though, as I can see electrical cords and pipes through the back glass.

Thanks! Those are just Green Star Polyps. My LFS received some Live Rock that was covered in it, and she didn't feel like harvesting. She called me up and sold me some rather large pieces of rock covered in it for the same price as normal cured live rock! She rules!:D :D :D

Yeah, the black's really scrubbable. When it comes to paint, I unfortunately AM the reference point! I believe in my previous life, I must have been very rich and very mean to painters, because in this one I am broke and I am a slave to painting! (You can see some of my paintings on a MySpace slideshow by clicking my red house).

First, I put down a coat of odorless oil-based Kilz. Then, I top-coated it with 2 coats of a flat oil-based black, manufactured by a local paint company here in Oklahoma City. Probably overkill, but I wanted to be able to wash it.

Yes, I painted it with the tanks still on it. I've got skills, but if you're not confident, just tape off the glass with blue 2 inch masking tape. It won't leave any residue on the glass when you remove it. Tarp off around the floor, etc...

well that took some skills, especially around the carpet! I had a hard enough time painting the rear of my tank once it was up and running.

The black looks real nice btw.

It was all in the tools! I used a 2 inch angled brush for the canopies, and a 3 inch flat brush for the cabinet.

Smooth strokes Danielson!!!

Definitely looks better black. VERY nice set up, I like that!!!! Do the 2 different tanks have separate purposes? Or just 2 different tanks? I REALLY like that set up.

The tanks are on separate water systems. The 30 has its own Oceanic sump underneath:

<img src=http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w16/KOLE1357/30gal.jpg>

I wanted the systems to be separate for main tank issues. I can toss injured fish over into the 30 until they mend, and I also use it for a "break-in" tank for new livestock. My LFS quarantines everything, but I like to start them off in the 30 so that I can get to know their particular needs before plopping them over to the main.;)

I also keep not-so-reef friendly animals in there like the Lemonpeel Angelfish and the Tube Anemone. The Tube is generally reef safe, but I like to keep it controlled in the 30.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I'm really happy with it! :D

LMAO! I didn't even read "Occupation: Painter". Hahaha! Although art painting is much different than interior/exterior painting. You know, I can't say I've used an oil-based paint in the last 10 years though! :p

I'm actually a Residential/Commercial Paint Contractor to support my art painting/reef habits! I focus more on the fancy stuff like Faux finishes, Murals, decorative texturing, etc. Unfortunately most of the paints that I work with for such things are Alkyds.

Don't get me wrong though...I said I was broke! I'm not above painting an exterior now and again.
