I recently purchased these units in replacement of an old knop reactor that could not keep up with my new (180g) tank. I understood that the units can sit next to the sump and will suck water from the sump (and drip back). I am discovering that this may only be true if the water level in the sump is higher than the units. I had the units running well beside the sump with a slightly lower water level but over night my kalc unit ran partially dry; it started to push water out of the output line (no sucking in). This left the PH probe high and dry (don't know yet if this has ruined the PH probe.

Any suggesstions? Do you think the probe needs replaced? Do the units need to be below water level to run?

Your PH Probe should be fine. You might try feeding it from an area of you sump where the water level is higher. You could also tap in to your return line or or use an Aqua Lifter pump to feed your Calcium reactor.
