T-5 Lighting Question

I am wanting to put T-5's over my 75 gallon reef tank, but my canopy was built for metal halide being about 14" high. Will T-5's be as good this far from the surface of the water, or should I stick to halide? If I put really good reflectors on the bulbs, will they still work well? I was thinking of putting about 6 bulbs over the tank. Would this be enough light to keep a little of everything?

just lower the lights to about 3-5" above water.
