how long have you had the coral? do you have a lot of direct flow on it? hammers dont like a lot of flow, this will cause them to shrink up.

I sometimes target feed mine bits of shrimp. I mainly feed phyto, oyster eggs and marine snow. Hammers are beautiful and can grow large with sweepers. Mine prefers med-high light, when I put in low in the tank he doesn't open all the way. ( I have t5's). When I purchased my hammer he was about 2 and half inches now he is about 8-9 inches, I've had him for about 3 years.

i have never target fed my hammer, but it will catch pieces of what i feed the tank. when i about it there was 4 heads, with one splitting. i just traded off a piece with 4 heads, and i still have 6+ heads. :) i had mine for about 2 years under PC lights. it seems to do best about mid tank, with just enough flow to make the tentacles sway in the water.

Mine also catches what's in the tank, also I read somewhere hammers are good indicators of water quality. Mine definitely lets me know if my tank needs something. But it also shrinks up from time to time.
