im not trying to hijack the thread, and may be useful to help out with the original question, but what do you need to connect the fans to an electrical outlet? i stopped by my local radioshack and i asked the guy what i need to run the computer fans from the socket and he had no clue. can someone show me or tell me what and where i can find them online?

thanks,

-james

i went to comp ANYway and bought 2 fans. i have a 12v adapter from radio whack....

now how to connect them....there seems to be
3 wires out of my fan and 2 wires out of my 12v adapter if i cut the wire....

any tutorials would be helpful...and harris thank you that was the tutorial i was
thinking of....but it did fail to show the elementary electricians 101 i needed...

1 of them is +
1 of them is negative -
1 of them is most likely ground or + if it is a two speed MTR.

This is what I did, I had this 12v fan and an old 12v charger from a cell phone I think and I just spliced them together with wire connectors and then wrapped the with electrical tape then I use a timer to control when it goes on and off

Use the red and black wires on the fans, ignore the yellow it is for a computer with a temp sensor in it.

The old cell charger is probably less than 12V (unless its from a bag phone, remember those?). That would make the fan run slow or possibly not at all... check the voltage.
Also most adapters will have positive(+) or negative(-) marked on the wires. The negative(-) wire may be ribbed or have a stripe. As for the fan. Red is positive(+) and black is negative(-). There may be some fans out there with black wires like the adapters, look for the same kind of markings or ribs on one of the wires. Radio SHack does have plugs to match some adapters which means the adapter isn't hardwired and may be easily disconnected. Connect the plug to the fan and off you go...
Also I highly reccomend soldering and shrink tubing the connections rather than a mechanical connectors that can come loose and/or corrode...

This DC adapter from Harbor Freight will run 3 or 4 fans and has adjustable voltage. Lower voltages just make the fans run slower which is sometimes good in the winter or when loud fans are used. I run mine on 10.5 or 12v in the summer and cut it back to 7.5 or 9v in the winter.

AZ- how do you cut it back in the winter to 7.5 or 9?

AZ- do you run sewer trucks? I sell Vactors and Elgin Street Sweepers in FL. Sorry for getting off track, but I saw your occupation description.

The Harbor Freight DC power supply has a small dial or slot on the side you turn to vary the voltage anywhere from 3 to 12 volts.
I have run Vactors in the past but I have been more on the treatment side along with supervision for the last 20 years or so. I retired from municipal operations and joined a consulting environmental engineering firm 2 years ago, so now I'm on the dark side!

Well if you guys ever need sewer trucks or trailer jetters contact me and I will get you a deal. Thanks for the info on the DC power supply. What fans are you running?

On a side note, AZ how do you like the OM squirt? If you did it again would you do the traditional OM4? What pump are you using on your closed loop? I have a 90 I am starting and I want to get a OM, but I am still looking for ideas and feedback about them. Can you post a pic of your OM setup? PS what is a diamond edge tank?

I traded frags for the Squirt 2 way or I would probably still be using the old SQWD which actually never failed me. I like the Squirt much better and if I were buying new would probably get the 4 way, I may buy the new drum soon to convert it. I am using a OceanRunner 3500 and its working like a champ. Flow is good, noise is nonexistent, power consumption is low and heat generation is nil. I had a Quiet One 4000 previously until I noticed my chiller was running constantly. Through trial and error I traced it to the 4000 which was leaking voltage into the tank and creating gobs of heat too. It went in the trash after that!

A Diamond Edge tank has edges that are ground and polished perfectly flat then slightly bevelled at a 45 degree angle so it does not require silicone to seal the edges. The edges are glued together and have a real clean look since there in no silicone in the way.

I use 120mm Vantec Stealth fans from newegg.com.

what do u think of this one?

can u set the temp set ups?

I tried thermal controlled fans but they ran at 100% speed all the time due to the heat in the canopy so were a waste of money. The Stealth on a variable voltage DC power supply can be speed controlled by a simple turn of the voltage screw. I run them at 100% most of the Summer and back them down to 10.5 or 9 volts in the Winter when I don't need so much cooling and evaporation.

Using the super squirt compact, some pictures are in my gallery.
Love the random flow it produces. Customer service is top notch!
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
