I don't want to put a sss in my tank w/dsb for fear of depleting the micro-fauna. Will a ss Goby do the same thing?

The goby will keep the top layer clean by constantly turning it over by passing it thru its gills. I have one that does wonders. He really doesnt go very deep (about 1/4").

Your star fish (we're supposed to start saying sea star...) is likely to clean your sand so well that it will starve. If you don't mind replacing the starfish every year or so, it will keep your sand immaculate. The goby will be a lot more fun to watch, and do a decent job, but more importantly, will eat other foods as well and flourish in a tank.
