Brown Diatom

What does it mean when brown diatom that is all over my rock is turning white?
Plus the green hair algea on the back of my tank is getting lighter green splotches on it!

Water parameters show nothing out of the blue. thats why I am confused.

To tell you the truth though I did do something crazy this week. I noticed my xenia always closes up just after a water change. I use RO/DI and get it all to temp before it goes into the display. Then the xenia takes all week to just start to open and then bang I do another water change and it closes again.
So this week I checked the parameters focusing on the Nitrate and all was fine. Next all these splotches and white stuff started to occur. Also my xenia is doing really well now after not doing the water change!
Can often water changes be a problem?

Also for future reference with xenia, does every type pulse or just certain types!

I am doing a bimonthly water change and feel it is quite good as you want to give the corals a chance to get use to that new water. Unless your fishload is very high.

oh right! do you think thats why my xenia has not yet burst into life?
i have read that xenia is a good indication that if things go bad in the tank, the xenia will let you know! this was my initial thoughts but all is good so seeing that it is fairly new, do you think its just acclimatising to my tank?
and do you think these bimonthly water changes will aid the xenia as well as kill off the algea and diatom?

it does kind of make sense now if this is how xenia behaves!
