View Full Version : Koralia or SEIO

I'm torn between two worlds. I have a 90 gallon reef ready tank with a deep sand bed and approximately 165 lbs of liverock. I'm slowly but surely adding corals of various types. Everything is up and running but I need more waterflow. I had two Maxijet 1200s moving lots of water, but they caused a lot of heat. So I ditched them for one Koralia 1, thinking 400 gph was good movement. Got it home, put it in, and the flow is so widespread that it wasn't enough. So where do I go from here? I'm torn between several options.

Do I add two Koralia 3's? Or how about two Koralia 4's? If not these, how about two SEIO M820's or two SEIO M1100's? I don't want to have too much flow, since I don't have Acro's or anything that needs massive amounts of water movement. I need something that will be suitable for polyps, LPS, mushrooms, soft corals, and the SPS (if placed directly into the flow). What do you guys think? Thanks.

the seio's are much uglier and also have problems with being reliable. My friend moved from seio's to koralia's and he is much happier. he has 2 3's in his 75 gallon and he thinks its perfect. For a 90 you will want atleast 2 3's

I never used Seios, but the Koralias are strong & quiet. I have 2x HK4s on a 4ft 100g reef.

What kind of livestock do you have in the tank?

Koralia of course. Low power consumption. Nicer design. wide pattern flow. Nothing can beat the magnet.

Two of the #4's.

I have one #4 in my 75 and love it. I will probably add a 3 or 4 on the other side. For a 90 a would suggest two #4. It seems to me that the seios should be much cheaper considering that the hk4's are only $48. Much more value in the koralias IMO.

I replaced two 1500 for two 4s and will never turn back. I love the Koralias, and have had them since they first came out.

i just got 2 4's and love them
never tried seios so i cant compare them but i love the overall design and output

2 #4's, easy ;)

I too replaced my 1100 seios with the k4's. The response from my tank has never been better. Plus the k's are much more reliable than the seios

Where in the tank are you finding is the best placement? High or low?

Depends on layout and flow you're trying to achieve. My Seio 1100 pushes all the way across a 3ft tank with the current very easily, the K3's don't, but the flow cone is wider for the 18" or so the flow is still noticable. The K4's might better.

Not at all...at least mine don't.

I have two #4's on the back wall of my tank pointing at a slight angle towards the front glass and then one on each side pointing in towards the middle.

I am thinking about replacing my 2 seios 1100s with 2 k4's. but will they work on the seio controller as well?

Yes, not a pump for cycling on and off. But people are using them on the seio controller. It ramps them up and down from 50% - 100%. Im using the Koralis and the Tunze nanos on the Seio controller.

are these pumps suitable if you have inverts...ie sea hare. I have had to mod my mj's to avoid the little guy from being killed but will these pumps pose a danger to him as well???

I am very interested in the Koralias as well. Does anyone have a pic to show a size comparison. Perhaps between the 4's and the 1500's?

Your sea hare is toast on the Koralia's. The front end is totally open for the propeller so he will get chopped.
Also for the record SEIOs are crap. The mounts suck the pump sucks, the price is a rip. I bought them and the only use I could find is for mixing saltwater for water changes. For the money Koralias on a SEIO controller is probably the closest to Tunze you can get without taking out a second mortgage.

I have one Koralia 4 (1,200 GPH) for my 120 gallon reef that has zoo's, mushrooms, LPS, SPS and soft corals. I have the Koralia aimed at the opposite side of the tank and have great water flow. I love the Koralia 4 so much that I'm replacing my three Maxi-Jet 900's with two Koralia 3's (850 GPH).

No pump is ever considered "safe" for inverts such as sea hare, nudibranch, etc...

I agree with the above statement, but I will say that i have seen snails of all sizes golfball size turbos to marble size ones that crawl all over the K-4"s I have. Mine run all the time though so they cant really crawl into them. If you plan on having one cycle on and off it prolly isnt safe.

Just rreplaced SEIO 820 and 620 in my 72 bowfront with 2 Koralia 3's. Also had several MJ1200's for spot flow. The Koralias are so much better I cannot beleive it. I get more flow in every place, better esthetics, less heat and lots of surface action. In 24 hours, the tank already looks better.

This is a no-brainer, Koralia pumps should beat Seio pumps hands down.

I had Seios 2600 and hated them. They were massive and ugly and very rarely stayed in the position that I wanted them to. The suctions are not nearly strong enough. I just put in 2 #4's in my 150 tank and love it. I am thinking about adding a #1 for near bottom tank flow . You will not be disappointed with the HK4's or 3's.

Dimensions are listed on the Dr. Fosters and Smith site.

Koralia 4 is on the far right. Koralia 3 on the far left and a Tunze Nano 6025 in the middle. Picture does not include the mounts for any of the pumps.

I have 2 Koralia 1s in my 40 cube and they hide nicely. I was concerned about size at first but they fit in real well and the flow is great. Took both of mine a bit to stop vibrating though (I guess had to slime over a bit) and they are great. I'm getting 8x the flow than what I had w/ my old AquaClear powerheads for less wattage.

I just got a couple of 3s to go along with my CL. These koralias are awesome. The flow is a massive but gentle steady output, nothing like conventional PHs.

I tryed to replace two of me seio 820's with the k4's. I dont like them at all, its not a wide stream, its like two tunnels of flow, one going straight up and one going straight down, you hardly feel any flow with your hand in fromt of the pump, my seio 820 kill the koralia 4's. maybe I got a defective batch, but I dont like them at all.

I had 2 Seio 1100s and they were nice, but not enough flow. I got a couple of K4s and they were nice, but of course I needed more as they're only rated 100gph more that the Seios. I stuck in a couple of Octuras and now it's perfect.

The Koralias have a nice design and although they're a little bigger than the Nanostreams, they have the possibility of pumping out much more flow.

Two thumbs up for Hydor.

After the Koralias, I even bought the Hydor LED moonlight since they were on sale. :D Can you tell I'm a fan of Hydor?

I dont like the seios all that much, but their Mounts are phenomenal. Nothing even touches the swivel mounts.

Tunzes on the other hand, you get a bar with a screw in it. Its friggen awful.

SEIO with a controller I have been using the 1100 on a controller without a problem since the release.
Using the hanging mode to secure one and a magnet mount for the other.

I had 2 tunze 6060 in my 100gal - switched to the Koralia 4's as good water movement, easier to clean, and much more aesthetically pleasing.

Great pieces of equipment!
