This red algae is growing out of my flowerpot coral. A fews weeks after I got it some leafy algae started growing out of it, then I pulled it out, and this red stuff starts growing.

What should I do? What kind of algae is that? I haven't had much problems with algae. Tank is about 8 months old

Also, how do I get rid of those pest anenome? I can lift that rock of GSP up and remove the rock will all the pests on it, so can I just scrub them off?

Any comments, suggestions, and criticisms regarding my full tank shot would be very appreciated.

thanks!

there is a powder called red slime remover, it works wonders within a day or two. with getting rid of the anenomes, take a turkey baster and boiling water and give a shot in its mouth, should do the trick

That is not red slime (cyano bacteria). I am not sure what it is though. It is interesting...Do you have a more zoomed in shot of it?

You can use kalwasser paste or a product called Joe's Juice and a syringe to get rid of the anenomes. Boiling water can work (less effective) but especially with a baster you would burn your Goni as well.

The Goniphora (flowerpot) looks bleached.

Good Luck,

I don't think the flowerpot coral is bleached, its just a beautiful white color. It was one of two I purchased at a decent shop in Pensacola in mid February. Both were sparkling white!

But I don't know much of anything about bleached corals.....how long would it stay bleached.....I mean it seems to be doing GREAT!

When did you get the Goni? Sparkling white...I am not saying they don't come in that color, but I don't think they do (Unless they are bleached). 50 people could chime in about their white goni that they have had for 3 years...but I don't think so.

It would stay bleached until it either got it's color back or dies. These are difficult to keep coral and I am not trying to be gloomy here but it usually takes a healthy one about 6 months to starve to death in an aquarium. Some people have been very successful with them though so I hope it works out for you.

mid February

I was told they are very easy to care for. It was one of two corals of the same color.

Goni's have one of the worst track reconds for keeping them alive. Sure they hang around for 6+ months, but, odds are they won't make it. With perhaps a few exceptions white is never good for a coral, white=bleached.

It is a shame that you were told that they are very easy to care for, because that is simply not true.

Well, your not the first one this ever happened too. Some of these LFS guys can see a newb coming for miles away. I remember when I set up my first tank and I made sure I got rocks out of the LFS tank with all the pretty little anenomies on it (aiptasia). The LFS guy just smiled and helped me find them.

I know a guy who works at an LFS that was very ethical and tried never to sell things to people that wouldn't do well in thier tanks. That all went down the tubes when they gave him a 10% commission on everything he sells. Today he would sell you a "Sparkling White" Goni for $100 (cause it is rare) and never bat an eye.

What about that algea? Does anyone know what it is?

There is a article on reefkeeper mag online about coral bleaching. Just do a search for past topics and it will come up. Dont feel bad...i bought a bleached hammer coral and conde anenome..they will turn an ulgly brownish color in about 4 months or so. I have sold mine since.

If that is cyno..here are my suggestions
1- are you running RowaPhos or something like it? if not run it
2- turn off you rlight for 3 days, that should rid it.

you say "you havent had an algae problem", looks like you have a bunch of algae in your tank..all diffrent kinds i can see just from the picture

Why that reefkeeping article? That is on dyed corals not bleached. Not getting the connection.

the ultimate weapon for empathetic participants in the industry of aquarium science against dishonorable practices is truly, instead, the educated consumer.

How dont you see the connection here?

"Part of responsible retail, in my opinion, does indeed include a conscientious decision by merchants to not make inappropriate animals available for impulse purchases by uninformed customers that are largely represented by impressionable new aquarists"

still dont see where im going with this?

Ah, I see now where you were going. I thought maybe you were saying the red goni was dyed or something. Of course we know that they do come in red...just not a "Sparkling White." All you put was a link though so I had to speculate...

I just dont understand how LFS's can look you dead in the eye and say "no, it's not bleached, it will remain that color"

that is the answer i got when asking about the torch i bought. I now buy all my coral and equipment from my local reef club, WAMAS...

But if newbies (like myself to a point) continue to buy these corals, they will still show up in the LFS. That why i think it is important to research the coral you are buying.

Have you ever seen a natural colored conde anemone in the store? i sure havent, they are all BRIGHT white! Dissapointing when they turn brown

whats your phosphate level?

miston

well, yea, I do have algae....and I guess it is sort of a problem, but its not out of control

what would yall suggest I do about it?

I do have chaeto in chamber 2 of my JBJ 12 gallon. For awhile it was growing like mad, and now it seems to have deteriorated almost

well, I have tested in probably six months....horrible I know

but everything seems to be fine

the first few times I tested for phosphates they have been zero, but like I said that was awhile ago.

But I do regular water changes, about 2 gallons every week to 10 days
