Does anyone have a predominant SPS tank that is thriving without a calcium reactor?

Please show us some picture of your tank that do well without a calcium reactor.

Guess that answers your question.

Yeah...but...I wish there were more people that don't use a calcium reactor in their tank.

Hope to see more pictures...

MAthU, how often do you do water changes then? What kind of salt are you using?

I will probably never hear the end of this, but.......

I do not have(or do) the following:
calcium reactor
kalk dripper/reactor
2 parts or dosing of any kind
water changes
skimmer
RO water

that being said......

Why do you wish more didn't use one? Personally I think it is easy to use and takes alot of the PITA work on a tank. The same goes for a doser for 2 part.

Either way both can easily maintain a large tank and can provide great results. Nice pics guys.

IME, after putting in a calcium reactor in my tank, the growth on my SPS has been amazing.

How on earth are your sps corals growing without you supplying calcium or alk?

???? DSB? 400s? Something in the well water? I've tried RO and dosing and things do better all natural. ;)

Very impressed. If you don't mind me asking, how do you maintain your calcium, alk and pH levels. And what is your water source like w/out using RO? Your reef looks great!

I don't. I just top off with the well water and have the lights come on and off. Well water has 0 amm., trite, trate, phos.

I bet your well water has some form of calcium in it too, great tank. I used to never use RODI water either until i moved to the desert where my TDS meter reads 800!! U bet your arse I use ODI now ;)

That's impressive desjardiniidj! I'm curious if you ever tested the well water just to see what the Ca, Alk, pH and Mg levels are?

I think these tanks are great, but hobby wise don't get it.

What do you mean hobby wise don't get it? Are you saying they don't understand how the chemistry of their tanks are working?

Very nice tank Rich.

Thanks much...i miss that tank. It was my dining room, many of meals gazing into it.
That room is now a 120g Tank and a love seat. Upgraded the 55g.
I now use a calcium reactor...A GEO 618. 3 months use thus far....i will say the corals have grown substantially.

Cheers.

wow... Race, that's real nice.

Sorry to hijack, but would a calcium reactor for a 30g be overkill?

Rich, did you notice more growth after you placed the calcium reactor in your setup?

It took about a 6-8 weeks before I really saw the difference...the top corals didn't touch each other.....they do now!!

Jay, thanks for the comment.
FWIW....I'd go the B-ionic route on a 30g...no need for a CR unless its something you desire. Granite the CR requires 3-4 outlets.....ummm daily dosing....no outlets needed. HTH.

Cheers.

P.S.--Found a photo i took 01-01-07....you can see the difference between the two photos on how well the corals have grown.

There are tons of people with great sps tanks that dont use a CaRx. My tank until just a month or so ago was run on Randy's DIY 2-Part and a dual dosing pump... and honestly, my tank was alot more stable and easier to dial in when I used that method. I am getting the CaRx dialed in now, but it has been a much bigger hastle than I anticipated. If I had known it was going to be such a PITA I probably would have stuck with the two part.

Kurt,
I couldn't agree with you more...

Yet I think you'll appreciate the CR when its dialed in and your not dosing daily! :D

CamBarr...thanks bro!! Time and husbandry....as we should all know that by now!!

does anybody use kalkwasser succesfully?

eagleONE

It seems like people get better growth after putting in a reactor rather than daily dosing... or atleast to me.

I'm doing the 2-part Bionic. My tank is mostly sps so that why I've been considering one.

Horace
05/24/2007, 07:56 PM
I was using a dual dosing pump to dose my 2-part 24/7 so I wasnt doing it manually, but it did require me making up a gallon of two part every 3-4 weeks or so for my 75g. Using a dosing pump is the only way to go if your using two part... if I had to dose it manually I would have bought a CaRx a LONG time ago haha.

bluetmax
05/24/2007, 07:58 PM
For those of you that use dosing pumps, which kinds do you use? I have been thinking about getting one to dose B-Ionic, but really haven't a clue about which brand(s) is best.

eagleONE

In the long run, isn't it better to get a Ca Reactor than dosing?

I have going almost completely sps and I have a clam.
