All right...Nanotuners now has a lighting retrofit kit for the Red Sea Max (34 gallons). I have the option to go with a 70 watt or a 150watt HQI. Both choices can come with or without 2 PC actinics. My tank is 17" deep (to the sand bed) and I have the tank set up as a clam tank. My question to you all is, IYO...
70 or 150 watt?
12,500 k or 20,000 k bulb?
PC supplimentation or not?
I have a chiller on the system and the retro comes with much better cooling fans than the stock fans. I am concerned with both color and health of the clams. What is the best of both worlds?

I would always go with more wattage than less with clams. With 150w, you could choose the color you like the best and they will still get plenty of light to grow. If you use the 20,000K bulbs you probably don't need the actinic. I have 4 croceas under 250w with the 15,000K XM and they are thriving.

Go with the 150 MH. Get either a 12k or even better a 10k bulb. Use actinic PC to get the color you want. You sacrifice a lot of intensity when you use 20k bulbs.

For the RedMax, I would go with the 150w.
I've seen the RedMax and I have a 30g cube from Oceanic, which has similar size. I had a 70w14000k and it wasn't enough for my SPS and clam. I went to 2 x 70w and still felt it wasn't enough. I now have 250w and it's very nice.

What bulb are you running? Any actinic supplementation?
