I live in Arizona... Outside temps are over 100 already... I keep my house at 78 degrees.... Recently my 1/3 hp JBJ Artica chiller started popping fuses... The chiller wont come back on now, even after I replace the fuse...

Please advise

If your inside temp is 78 and you have fans for cooling, your OK.

Sounds like your chiller needs to be checked out, or ran over to a separate less-used circuit. I also have a 1/3hp on my 180. It's on it's own circuit and controlled remotely with X-10.
FWIW, I keep my house 72-74, but the chiller still runs regularly. If the house is 78, the chiller runs nearly constantly. Of course around here, we have the unique problem of the swamp cooler adding humidity and making evaporating fans less effective. You probably have AC though?

Yes.. the house is newer and has central AC... without the lights on... the tank is around 82 without the chiller.

Do you have fans blowing into the sump? They will help a lot with evaporative cooling until you get your chiller working again.

Size shouldn't matter should it. I have a 24g that has to have a 2.5" fan running 24/7.It has a canopy. My 75g ( open top )cools fast with a fan running over surface of the sump. About 1 deg in less than a hour.

Anyone know a good source for the JBJ Articia fuses ? I have a 1/4 HP and blew my first fuse last week. Had a heck of a time finding a replacement. I guess I have an 'old' style fuse, approx. 1 and 1/2 inch in length with a white paper material on it.
Thanks

I put my sump in the basement. It actually cools my tank so much that I had to plug the heater back in :) :) :)

I get mine from home depot. 1.25 each or so

I second the basement sump. Tank rarely gets above 80.

Basements are rare in Arizona.

I was able to get the chiller running. I also added a 20" fan to the top of the tank, and a desktop fan in the sump... This helps the chiller so it doesnt have to work so hard.

I live vegas so I know a little bit about what lotus is talking about. You may want to look into getting a new chiller maybe a new brand. While people here will tell you your fine, I know from experience all it takes is one window to blow to lose all your livestock in a matter of hours. What if your ac freezes up or even if your power goes out, my house will go from 72 to 90 in like an hour, maybe less. I make sure to have a chiller on my tank so my water doesnt cook again.

This summer I was toying with the idea of running a pvc loop around a section of the front yard. The idea would be to turn on a pump to circulate water through 3/4" pvc back and forth 5-6 times through the cool earth when the tank got too warm. The timer would also turn it on every 6 hrs for 1 min to prevent stagnant water and to not let it freeze in the winter.
Just an idea, I want to see how warm it gets without it first. Still a new tank.

It would seem like that would be more expensive than a chiller.

I use a window AC unit in my Equip. Room.

Good luck on your AC bill. It's gonna hurt.
