Just got a 14 gal oceanic bio cube with stand. My kids and I wanted to get into salt. We have a 20 gal fresh water tank with community fish and invertabras (lobster and crabs) and we had cichlids for a while (ate everthing) . Havent started tank up yet but is it best to start with live sand , live rock and cycle for a few days and check levels and then throw in a cheap fish to check it out? And what about light timers , it has 3 different lights. the white the blue and blue led's . I assume the large lights should by timed somewhat. We plan on having live rock and some annimies and some coral and maybe 2 clowns and a goby. What do you think? :)

[welcome]

I would add live rock and let the system run for a while. Sand is fine to add, but is optional. There's no need to add a fish to test the system. Just wait for a few weeks of zero ammonia and then start stocking.

That tank is a bit small for a pair of clowns, in my opinion. I'd stick with a neon goby and some other small fish.
