I have measured an excessively high alkalinity after operating a new calcium reactor for about a month. I measure about 6 mEq alkalinity and about 370 ppm calcium. I know that this is too high. Specifically I would like to reduce this value to about 4 mEq. This would reduce my calcium to about 330 ppm. Once I get there I can supplement only the calcium to obtain the 400 ppm. My question is whether I should add calcium now or should I shut the calcium reactor off and wait to get things balanced after which I turn it back on? I am new to this and don't want to screw things up too badly by making a mistake in balancing the system.

I'd shut off the reactor and supplement calcium as needed to keep it where you want. I'd recommend at least 350 ppm. Calcium chloride (such as Turbo Calcium or Dow Flake) is a fine way to go. Once the alkalinity was below 4 meq/L, I'd start tuning the reactor.
