It's exactly what it sounds like. You use fresh water, match the temp and pH to your tank water and put your fish or corals in it. It's a way to treat certain diseases. There's all kinds of information about it on here.

You don't want to put your corals in freshwater. Here is a link that talks about FW dips.

Freshwater dips are a way of getting external parasites off of fish and corals.

For example, on fish, flukes are very common (especially from lfs's. )

A five minute fresh water dip will, in most cases, eradicate the fish from flukes as to not introduce them in your home aquarium.

If you have never done it before , it is a painful experience, because the fish turns on his side and looks lethargic, and you think you're killing it, but low and behold, as long as the temp and ph were matched, they come back like a champ.

Takes some getting used to.

 I do know what you mean.

I was lucky, I watched someone else do it first.

Actually, my lfs fresh water dips every fish he sends home.

It's not as bad as you think. Some fish put on a show...Tangs for example. Others just "sit" there and look a little ****ed. Putting in some methylene blue helps calm them somewhat by darkening the water. Just make the water a dark blue. Kind of like putting a towel over an animals eyes. The FW dips work because they cause an osmotic rush of freshwater into the parasites and they explode. It does not erradicate the fish of all parasites but it surely helps take care of the one on the surface. Five minutes is usually enough, although I've read some others do it for 10 minutes:eek1:

Yes, I forgot about the methylene blue. My lfs uses it in his dips. :D
