ok.... i need an opninion here

I just got my sump is a 50G Plexy tank open top, and it has a small divider, it will have live rock (currently i bought 40# but it was dry for few months) the tank (sump) is 36" long, should I drill the side to put a bulkhead and connect my MAG 12 external? or should I just set it inside the sump? I will be running also an EuroReef R6 and I don't want to get too hot the frag tank, since I don't have a chiller and it is on my garage

SteveOhh
06/02/2007, 01:55 AM
I've got the same size frag tank & I only use a Mag 7 internally for my return......Sump is a 40 Breeder & I also have a 15 gallon fuge................IMO I don't like a whole lotta flow thru the sump. I also run a ER 135 skimmer..............doesn't get to hot, however I have my AC set to turn on a fan over the tank @ 78. For flow in the tank, I use a Koralia 4..works great...Link to my setup..... http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1130055

Nice tank too!!! ;) Not to be to nosey, but what did it set you back?

very nice!! I'm sure everyone wants some post coral pics.
I want to knwo what type of wood u used? like 4x4s, 2x4, etc?
are u going to put the sump on very top of the stand or are u putting it somewhere else?
wtg

jmc74
06/02/2007, 11:59 PM
I used 2x4 "Dry" Premium Quality, I wanted the wood to be as dry as posible to avoid warpage, and since the 2x4 I got were completely dry, onece I painted them I basically sealed them from the moisture.

I also used galvanized brakets, and deck screws (they are rust proof), and the 3/4" OAK for both levels, is better than plywood, I also used 1" foam insulation at the bottom of the tank and sump, to cushion them, as i don't want any strees points.

and finished the stand by painting it ULTRA WHITE ACRYLIC LATEX base 2 for EXTERIORS rolled and then SPRAYED (very messy  )

I'm still working on the electrical, trying to decide where it fits better...

Dang!

I think I'll have to set something like this up...
Are you going super formal on this pro and making it a business?

jmc74
06/04/2007, 10:43 PM
not formal, but this is my second try at this (frags) the first was a big failure, so this time im taking my time, and trying to acquire the right equipment vs trying to upgrade as we go... I learned the cheap equipment sometimes does not work (except I still got cheap lights :D , but if the don't work right, i can just upgrade either ballst or bulbs, and still less expensive than getting a top brand fixture...)

also i wanted to look right at home, since my garage has white cabinets all arround, so i pianted the stand white too.

if i do good on this, maybe next Christmas, I'll setup a Dual 8' x 4' x 1.5" frag tanks... but only if this takes off nice...
:p

ReefExtreme
06/08/2007, 07:18 PM
looks great. how much was the tank

jmc74
06/08/2007, 08:32 PM
$350 special order, and they finished in only 4 days!!, include was the large overflow and a 1.5" bulkhead

ReefExtreme
06/08/2007, 09:18 PM
that a very good price. i think i will call them

jmc74
06/08/2007, 10:07 PM
I know, that's why I posted their Info, on the picture, the quality is comparable to TRUVU, but at half the cost...

the same tank, I called TRUVU before and they wanted to sell it thru a dealer only.. BS.. well, I told them to call Aquarium Concepts, and the price was a ridiculous $589 plus tax, and 2 weeks to make it, then delivery time to the store, and it didn't include bulkhead either, that's extra

so I took my business elsewhere... and I did remember long ago finding by error Marine Marine Systems, in San Jose. so I searched again, and after a long, long search... finally I found it!

Can you explain the DIY returns a bit more?

Also, is the light fixture always going to be at that height?

thanks

the DIY are a split return with EDUCTORS, so I have great flow, I even think it may be too much :eek1:

also yes, the lights are fixes for now, until I can tell if the light is needed lower, all I have to do is change the mounting, and add the suspension cables.

whos the maker of the lights and whats the wattage of the MH?

jmc74
06/09/2007, 09:46 PM
they are ODDYSEA, the same as the coralife, and they are dual 250w HQI ,4x 65w PC actinics & 6 sets of 2 wide spread LED moon lights

yes looking realy good, do you think that one with a single 250watt MH would light a shallow 32X32 tank ?

jmc74
06/10/2007, 06:28 PM
I personally don't know, but it seems like it would...

now I have a question for the experts here:rolleye1:

ok, my lights are "DUAL 250w HQI 15k, it also has 4x 65w Actinics Blue, should i lower the lights or will this be enought light for my frag tank, currently they are 17" above the tank, or 18" above the water or 26" above the eggcrate.

!!!!!!FEEDBACK IS REALLY NEEDED!!!!!

RobSW1
06/10/2007, 06:55 PM
It seems really high to me.....personally i would do maybe 12" above water....i think this will give optimal growth.

jmc74
06/12/2007, 01:07 AM
the quality is great! i get lots of complements when they see it in person... and is just as good as TRUVU, seems are clear, buffed edges, etc. they have 3 shops, but the build it on one shop, not on the one at 10th st...

give it a try, you don't have to pay until you pick up, so if you don't like it, just tell them

ntrlfive
06/12/2007, 02:32 AM

mine was made of 3/8" and is it stong, no bow anyware.

Excellent frag setup JMC, I'm actually setting up something similiar to this in my garage. I read the whole thread but don't see much info on what equipment your actually using. What return pump are you using, I saw that you mentioned using something that is much better than the Mag12 you were using. So what are you using now. Also how much total volume of water is in this setup? And lastly what skimmer is that? Looks like a Coralife Skimmer.

Thanks and good luck bro.

thanks...

BTW, I still have the frag tank, I have not sold it yet, it has produced about $300 worth of frags :)

and i don't think in my area are too manny reefers interested on the tank, so it looks like I will be keeping it ...:rolleye1:

sad part is that i sold the calcium reactor and ph monitor, c02 tank, etc. but the lights and tank, live rock, etc. never was sold.

well, this monday I re-organized the frag tank, i completely removed the old egg crate, and cleaned all the algae it had grown in the tank, also i removed all 120# of LR and placed it on the tank to support the new black egg crate, so no more PVC legs, also i cleanned the sump, skimmer, pumps, etc. now is nice and clean, i will be getting a new cleanup crew and let them clean the plugs, rock, sand, etc.

i hope no more algae.... pic's will follow soon.

ok, that was lots of pictures... he, he

if anyone can identify some of the corals on the pictures, please post the name and description, please..

ok now I have a small addition to my frag setup, it is a 15g Long TRUVU that I will use for Zoas and low light stuff.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/8587656@N08/2184850714/" title="Frag Tank '08 018 by jmc74, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2040/2184850714_f5fe7b35de_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Frag Tank '08 018" /></a>

at this moment is has the crappy light that was included, but I will retro into dual 65w PC for 130w for 15g tank. :D

this is one of the few items on it, oh and it shares the filtration with my main frag tank

holy crap, i have not seen a better setup, no lie. I have a 20g frag, but thinking of revving up my "coral farm", around how much did all of this run, I need a sort of estimate to startup.

Amazing setup

All I can say is, be patient, very patient....:rolleye1:

as I have been thru a roller coaster, I almost sold everything "TWICE" and I almost got out of the hobby once...:eek1:

but after all, I'm here still going and i thing finally I will get to see the results, even as I have already had sales of the frags I had for about $350 in 1 week... not bad, sadly it was when I had my stuff for sale, but no takers on the tank allow me to hold on to it, and now I'm not selling it "NO MORE!!!"

I will be attending the regional SWAP on Feb, 09,2008 from my club BAR. so I'm fragin like a MAD man. my egg crate as we speak is about 60% full and I'm not done yet!

So you were trying to sell the setup and instead bought a 15long??? Sounds like something I would do.

Looks great. IMHO, grow more softies and start making your own plugs and live rock. That is my plan if I ever get around to it.

So you were trying to sell the setup and instead bought a 15long??? Sounds like something I would do.

Looks great. IMHO, grow more softies and start making your own plugs and live rock. That is my plan if I ever get around to it.

not exactly...

you see; I had the 60g frag tank and a 20g Long AGA and a 15g Long truvue, also my wife has my old 75G reef tank, at one point for several reasons, I decided to get out of the hobby, and I never did, actually I only took a small break, but since my wife keep the 75G main tank, I got involved again on it...

then for few months I build this 60G frag tank, only to fail badly and grow only algae :mad2: , so I got fed up, and decide to sell it all! well I only sold few items, like the CA reactor, ph meter, 20G long, etc.

but no body wanted the 60G frag tank, because it is big, and the stand is custom, so it goes with it, and it is even bigger. so after giving it some time and see that my sell was un-successful, here I'm again, except this time I'm taking a different route, and I organized the tank differently, and I got to try different way to minimize the algae growth, as the introduction of few beneficial fishes, crabs, snails, etc.

so this is my 3rd try, and like they say 3 times a charm. this should be ok. I hope :(

Nice setup. How is the eggcrate in your frag tank supported. Is it just lying in the rock below?

jmc74 A few great things

I see your construction of your supports is first rate. Also, it looks like you painted everything white, which is pure genius, given the predominant color of salt creep...

Thanks for the prices on your setup on page 4 of this thread. Lets everyone know how you arrived at a sweet setup. AND $300-400 for a frag tank sounds expensive until you snuggle it in amongst the rest of the setup.

Thanks for the thread. And when one really studies the photos, your wife's tank really has tremendous details only available to those with established tanks. There's zoos in every little nook and cranny. Cool, indeed!

jmc74

thanks Ed

yes my old tank (wife's) is my unlimited supply of frags ;)

and it can be expensive at first, but you soon realize this is fun and 200% worth every penny...

last weekend I was at our local club frag swap, and I bring to the swap 42 frags!! some not the greatest, but some were nice, and it only gets better from here, as the new lights are even better.

Do you not find your skimmer is too small to process that volume of water?

Maybe its because you dont have any fish in there.

How do you feed your corals? confused:

well actually, I do have 3 fishes: 2 algae blenies and 1 Yellow tang.

but i don't have nitrates, as I don't feed the fishes, the blenies ignore the food, and the yellow tank can careless for it, as it graces all day long on algae :(

here is a question for you...why did you go with a sand bed??

jmc74
02/20/2008, 02:36 AM
actually is Aragonite, and it helps keep the PH stable, I had the same issue on my main tank, and I found that if you add a small bed of aragonite the ph will balance so it wont keep going up/down, also the calcium stays about 450-500, because it is coral sand...

IC GEL, thats about the most popular Gel Glue, you should find it at most LFS, or just make sure it is "cyanoacrylate gel "

They were all over eBay when he first posted that picture... They were also a lot cheaper back then too... Now when they do pop up on eBay, they are only $10 cheaper than a pinpoint meter...
