View Full Version : pump dead. need advice!

Well, the used pump i bought finally died. It was the one in my wet/dry filter. I have a 55 gal. tank with an approximately 5 gal. wet/dry filter/sump.
For the interim I placed two airstones (one in the display, one in the sump) in the system. It's been that way for about 6 hours. I'm going to replace the pump as soon as it can get here by overnight shipping.
First question is will the airstones/pump keep the oxygen levels up enough for the display to survive and for the water to stay safe in the sump? I have a mushroom, star polyps, and several button polyps. Also three fish (pseudochromis, blue damsel and a CB angel). Oh, and an urchin, a cleaner shrimp and several snails.
Second question is what water pump to buy. I couldn't find a brand name on the dead one but did find the specs. 115 volts/60Hz/45Watts/8Amps. It was labeled as a "Model 5 Utility Pump 8C99," but again, no brand name.
I have no idea on the dead pump's GPH. My overflow is the simple box with baffles and a U tube siphon to a rear box where the water drops to the sump. Will whatever I replace it with simply pull enough water through the overflow to pump back up into the display? Keep it comparable?
I guess my next problem is what brand to buy to replace it? My options are Eheim, Oceanrunner, Magdrive or Quiet One. I'd like to buy the best of these four.
Sorry about the drawn out post but I wanted to be specific. Any advice would be really appreciated!

You dont have any powerheads ? And 1 night would be ok. If longer i would get some powerheads. And i dont think airstones will be enough for 02 exchange. Do you have Skimmer ?

Yep, got a skimmer running. There are also three MJs in the display. Two 1200s and a 600. They're running fine but i don't have them running with any air intake, except for the one on the skimmer.

This will be fine for display. I would not use air stones. Not needed for salt water. The exhange of 02 is from circulation.
Is this the wet/dry filter pump that died?

yeah, that's the one. I need to know if any comparable pump I buy will work for my system. For example, there's an MD5 that is 45 Watts and pumps 500 GPH. Would that be too much for my overflow box to handle? Or simply put, would it pump too much water in the display and cause it to over flow?

Your LR is your filtration. 55 gal with nominal stock would be fine without it. But if you want to use then clean regularly. Can be a nitrate collector. Sorry cant help with pump upgrade or replacement , never used one.

Yeah, filtration isn't the problem, just the technical part of the pump. anyone else?

Is it to late to cancel your order and get a QuietOne 3000. I'm about to replace my Mag5 as it is to noisy for me.
