I have an Aqua C Remora Pro skimmer that has a mag 3 pump hanging inside the display tank (no sump). I removed the sponge filter as recommended to control nitrates so I just have the plastic cover over the pump inlet that would hold the sponge on it if it was there. This plastic piece however has large holes and crevices on it and does not keep my snails from crawling inside the pump inlet and getting stuck there from the suction. Is there something I can cover the inlet with to keep this from happening?

Leave the sponge filter on it and just keep it cleaned. Removing it will not control nitrates, it'll just remove the possiblity of you not cleaning the filter often enough to keep it from adding to nitrate problems.

Sure, by some nylon mesh screen from Home Depot or other hardware store and superglue it on.
