View Full Version : How do you know if your Nem is dead?

I just bought one this past weekend and everything seemed fine. I woke up this morning to find it with its tentacles down and foot sticking straight up. It's just kind of floating and the foot is really soft. I flipped it back over but I really don't know if I should get it out of the tank or what......

It will look like ooze and your skimmer will be skimming all over your floor. They seem to fall apart very quickly after death.

If you have to ask ... it's not dead (at least not yet). When they're gone, they disintegrate into the most vile smelling pile of snotty goo you'll ever have the misfortune of smelling in your life. There's no mistaking it.

(Yeah, this hobby has been great for introducing me to new smells ... )

Good luck, hopefully it's just settling in, but ... well .. like I said, good luck.

yea i've had a few good sized queen conchs wedge themselves in rock and die , ugh !

i lost a blue haddoni carpet anemone in the mid '80's but missed out on the putrid aroma by getting it out of the tank minutes before melt down . the blueface angel had been picking at it all day . if i remember right , it was limp , the column deflated , flattened and inverted meeting the underside of a gaping distended oral cavity .

Yeah OK, could be the second-most vile thing. :) I remember pulling out a half decomposed, gigantic turbo snail that kicked off and .. yeah it was pretty gross. Hard to say which one I would say was "worse" .. they both rank up there as "things I never want to smell ever again."

How does it rank to a weeks worth of very dry skimmate???

The nem could just me moving around and ran into a rock upside down. Thats what happened to my carpet nem at least. It corrected itself within 10 minutes and then anchored his foot.

I have to ask, how does one kill Xenia? :D usually it's just the opposite and you can't get rid of it.

Shipping.. Xenia does not ship well... Xenia may be like a weed but years ago in the hobby it was very rare because it would not ship well... Now most lfs stores have it because people trade it in all the time...

well, I came home today and it's upside down again. I reached into the tank and picked it up and smelled it, but it wasn't anything like what you guys are describing. I didn't think it smelled at all. It was slimy, on the bottom, and the tentacles felt a little sticky. The mouth is not gaping open or anything. I dug a hole in the sand and placed him in it, he just doesn't seem right, I would have thought he would at least keep himself right side up....

when they aren't happy at all with their current location/conditions they will 'bubble up' in an attempt to float in the currents to a more desirable location, sounds like what your nem is trying to do :(

only the anemone knows what it is about your system it doesn't like, it could be flow, light, water quality, etc.......etc.......

Ok, thanks for all the replies everyone.

I redirected the power heads in my tank to get more water movement where the Sebae is, and it seems to be doing better. And for the first time my Marroon hosted in it. I think it may be ok, at least I hope.
