My DIY beckett skimmer is about
4.5 ft tall
4 inch pvc mixing chamber
1 inch pvc down pipe

I'm using a mag 9.5 pump and I'm thinking of upgrading the pump.

What's the best pump to use?
Thanks

any pressure pump is going to be better then ur mag pump i would go for a range of 1000-1500 and as for pump brands genx is good along with panworld but genx will be cheaper

how do you know if a pump is "pressure rated". I thought if a pump has a head rating it was pressure rated.

T4 velocity would be my choice. A bit spendy though.

Pressure or flow rated pumps are just a missused term to indicate if a pump has a higher discharge pressure than another but there is no clear point on what people mean as there is no cut off point that say above this pressure is pressure rated if below is flow rated so it can really be missleading.
For your application (Becket or downdraft skimmers) you need a pump with high discharge head.
As mentioned above Iwaki, GenX or Pan worlds could be good choice.
Look for a pump like or the Iwaki 55 RT 28 feet max head (zero flow) or 1100 gph at zero head. That will put you in the 900 gph range trough the skimmer.
