I set up my 20g tank and did a run though on the system with tap water to find any potential problems. All have been fixed but one, the sucking noise. The best solution I have seen is the Durso sand pipe which would be perfect except for...

I put the bulkhead in the middle of the overflow and it is too narow for the 1/2' fittings to make a Durso sand pipe. I'm thinking a short piece of flexibly tubing to make the final 90 degree turn down from the joining piece.

Basically I don't' have room for the joint and the elbow any ideas would be much appreciated.

The problem is the PVC fittings you are using. If you go with supply fittings and a street el vs drain fittings you will find they are smaller and should fit better. Check out the link.

I use a Stockman configuration in mine, it requires less real estate:

You can also cut down the street ell to make it even smaller.

You might be able to run an external durso. basically put a bulkhead in the side of your overflow box, the durso 'T' attaches to the outside and the 90 bend goes on the inside.
