I've been away from the hobby for 5-6 years. Out of fustration with 150 gph powerheads, back then I put an 1100 gph ugly red/white/blue boat bilge pump in a 38 gallon tank. It was cycled on/off with a rheostat. These new Tunze/Koralis and such are just expensive better looking bilge pumps.

I was amazed at how much that 1100 gph cycled bilge pump helped my 38 gallon skimmerless tank.

Well I am building a new 50 gallon tank and didn't research closed loop enough before I drilled my tank. I put a 1" hole for the intake and 3/4" for the outlets, driven by a Quiet One 3000 (700gph) and a SCWD. Needless to say not enough flow.

Today it seems people are putting 50x turnover in their tanks!

My plan is soft, polyps, LPS, clams and maybe one or two SPS.
I also put an Argamax sugar sand bottom on this tank.

What should be my target flow/turnover, and can I put a big enough pump on my 1" intake+ SCWD closed loop?

Probably around 20-30x tank volume turned over per hourshould do. so you are looking at around 1000-1500gph total.
