View Full Version : Can a skimmer be too big for a tank?

I am putting together a 120G system with a sump of about 30-50 gallons. I do not have a fish list but would like to have it a little above the medium load. The tank is going to be SPS and LPS. I am looking at the Euro-Reef RS-250 because of the rating for a high bio load. But i am concerned that this will be too much skimming for the tank. IS this true, or do i have nothing to worry about and should use it?

Thanks,

Chris

The RS250 would be a good choice for slightly larger capacity or potential future growth. I wouldn't settle for any less that RS180.

But is there "to much skiming"?

That is a debateable topic and there's believers on both sides of the fence.

I dont think so, but there is "not enough waste for the skimmer to work properly"

You have nothing to worry about with that skimmer.

The problem of "overskimming" describes a condition where the skimmer is removing nutrients at such a rate that the corals become starved. This can usually be remedied by simply feeding more, IME. Just my .02:)

Ok thanks every one. I was going to ge the 180 but seen the 250 is not much more and should just put in the extra fifty bucks and get it.

hornet a friend of mine has the 250 on his 150 tall 48*24*30 high and he loves it. i think would be a great choice if your planning on sps.

There's tons of people on here that have skimmers that are overrated for their tank. It won't really hurt the tank and really is a smart idea in some cases. This would allow you to upgrade in the future and not have to buy a new skimmer. I myself run a skimmer rated for 100+ gallons on my 37 gallon reef and it does just fine. You'll get others who disagree but in your case, a Euro-Reef RS-250 would be perfect. :)

Thanks,
