I have a 75 gallon reef with a 20 gallon refugium and had battled hair algae for a solid 6 months. I did everything by the book with a weekly water change and aggressive skimming and nothing could keep the algae from coming back. I have a light bio load and I don't over feed. I decided to remove my sand bed down to about a quarter inch, just enough to cover the glass bottom. I also removed all the live rock and "cooked" it in a dark tub for two months changing the water every week. The amount of sediment in the tub after a water change was amazing. This method helps to clean the rock of phosphates by means of bacteria. The rocks are back in the display tank and the coralline algae is growing nicely, which it never did before. There is chaeotomorpha in the display growing steadily and everything is the way it should be. Those of you who have a hair algae problem may benefit from this method. More flow and less sand seems to work well for my situation.
