Isn't surface area one of the biggest factors in evaporation?

If all other things are equal, a 240 tall 72x24x31 will have the same evaporation rate as a 125 wide 72x24x17?

yes surface area, is top of tank covered, and air movement across. my 75 loses 1.5 gal aday w just a 4 in computer fan across top and 2in across sump in cabinet.

The actual tank water temperature is another factor, as is the air temperature at the surface.

Evap also cools your reef which depending on the ambient temp means your heater/s could use more electricity if the tank is heated above room temperature. Handy if it's not though, esp on those hot summer days!!!

I was startled to find my 100W heater was using nearly 1KWhr a day in winter, especially when the whole setup was only using 2.2KWhr !

correct sweevo... that's why he said: 'all other things equal,' if temp, surface agitation, humidity are all equal, it simply comes down to surface area.
