I would like to find the most reliable float for ATO, I thought once upon a time they made them with a safety back up so that if the float sticks the pump will only run for a couple of minutes and automaticaly shut off.

I can't find one like that. Are there ways to set up two floats so that both must agree in order to turn the pump on?

I would really like a VERY reliable and safe system of ATO without putting my tank at a ton of risk.

I would also like to find a nice inline pump so that if the ATO runs dry while I am out of town I don't get my house burnt down.

I dont know if this answers all your questions but do a search for the Tunze Osmolator. It uses electric eyes to sense the water level (nothing mechanical to jam) and it will only run the pump for a set ammt of time preventing overheating in case the resivior is dry.

Many that use them (me included) belive that they are the best units made.

also check www.autotopoff.com for parts to build a pretty decent unit.
