How much space behind tank for Vortec Driver?

How many inches of clear space do I need to put one of these behind my tank?

Since you only have 2-5/8 and need 3 inches you will need to make a bit of room. Looks like about 3/8 inches more will do it.

How long is the driver itself? I'm assuming you are adding additional space for airflow around the driver?

Allow 3.5" and you'll be fine. As long as hot air can rise you don't need to worry about boxing the heat in.
Post a pic with a ruler to show where you are and you'll get a definite yes or no answer.

I was told by Marine Depot that the driver itself is only 2-1/4" long. Is this true? See copy/paste of email below.

Thanks for contacting us. The Ecotech Vortech protrudes 2 1/4" from the tank and the cord comes out of the side of the motor rather than the back to also conserve space. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any further questions about the Vortech or any of our other products.

Robster-

First off, the portion of the pump you're referring to is called the motor, or dry side, not the driver. The driver is the circuit board which drives the motor.

How thick is your aquarium glass? I'll tell you exactly how much room you will need...

Thanks for setting me straight on the terminology here. The glass is 1/2" thick.

You're in luck then, for a 1/2" tank you will need roughly 2.5".

2 5/8" should be fine.

Sweet. The thought of draining and moving my tank just 1" was dreadful. You da man. Looking forward to the new ones to be released. I was told it would be sometime in late July early August. Is this still the target date? How about the controller. I am now reading there will be two versions of controllers that will be released after the new pumps/drivers are released?

Will this be enough clearance for proper cooling? The ambient temp of the room the tank is in is 75 F.

I have never had my Vortech's get warm enough to require any cooling. Just make sure air can rise around either side and you'll be ok.

i run one of mine at 100% and dont have heat issues in tight spaces and my tank temp is only 72*
