the intent of this thread is not to bore you with a lengthy and wordy build progression. sure i could post pictures of jesse and me loading the tank into the back of my pick up. pictures of me filling it with water. pictures of me mixing salt, adding sand, pictures of rocks in rubbermaid bins, pictures of my beautiful kids in the tank, pictures of my cool looking wood floor etc. not going to go there. im going to get straight to the point because i am a meat and potatos kind of guy.

Looking good!
How much space is left under the stand after you put in the sump? (not including any non-stock stuff)

Very nice! I saw your post in the other thread - just make sure that the power supply is outside the stand or it will add heat. You're right - a MJ1200 can add some heat to that amt of water. Make sure your stand is very well ventilated - it would actually chill a little better outside the stand - but if you keep it in the stand make sure there is very good ventilation.
I'm calling the SPCA because I really think that Interruptus needs a tank that say ... oh ... 64" long. ;)

Thank you in advance.

thanks god, amen.
dwarf, floor, er, carpet space about 8"X20". actually i took the Geo400 out of the cabinet because it wasnt efficient enough for my taste. stupid idea anyway. so now i have more room, say 8"X8"...
fliger, may as well call the Sierra Club and Greenpeace on me too, im a walking environmental violation. last time the sierra club showed up at my front door i politely escorted him into my garage where i introduced him to dirty motorcycles. can wait for the greenpeace guy, hunting season is right around the corner.
but all joking aside, my policy is that when i buy a fish thats too big for my tank, i get a bigger tank instead of returning the fish. jesse?
hi cindy...thx spleen, nooz, delsol...derek, my rational was bigger is better. fliger told me that.

i think using that wide angle job makes the fish look bigger, but if you guys really think im being bad please tell me. id be happy to give her up if thats the right thing to do.
she'd probably like 64" inches better...
god you're tank is bigger too, plus you are closer, amen.

Ya! I have two of them as well! It's a funny thing when we got them they did not have any instructions. We had a bunch of leaks with our units at first, I tried to use Teflon tape but no good. Everything seems to be working out great now.

Is the Vortech controller out, finally?
Spleen
flyingphish
08/19/2007, 12:35 AM
yep that is the controller...she goes 500-3000gph...i have it about 2/3rd cranked. no sandstorms, even at 3000gph; its such a wide stream. whats even more cool is the current that gets sucked towards it from every direction, thus the name.

08/20/2007, 10:44 AM
Jesse is right, there's no more "upgrade" like was suspected many months ago. You just buy the controller and you're off on your way. You buy one Wireless Wave Driver for each pump you own and they can communicate directly with one another to coordinate wave movements throughout your tank.
The offer going on right now through Aquarium Specialty is really just a promotional offer.

Wow, that is one of the best aquascaped tanks I've ever seen. And if thats a true watermelon, please get the dremel out and lets do some trading man. :)
edit - just saw your comment about the healthy reef. That was exactly my experience with the plug n play 120XL. It was so easy, I felt guilty at times. It all caught up to me with this 160XL, but it had nothing to do with the Elos System. In fact, if I had to deal with an unstable, funky plumbed system - with the other issues I had - I would have already quit this hobby.

how loud is the seachill? Did you compare it to your arctica?
I'm thinking of getting a seachill for a system 120. It says it can bring the temp down 18*F for a 90g, so the 120 should be easy.
It'd be a plus if I didn't have to drill into the basement for the chiller because it's so loud...

as for the chiller, I got the TR20, which is the 1/3 hp. same footprint and sound as the TR10/15. i like to future proof my equipment when i can. which is just an excuse really, i like over-kill.
the teco is louder than the arctica. it has a "silent mode", with that enabled it sounds about the same as the arctica...i must say i am most impressed with how quiet the arctica is. i bet it is the most quiet of them all. i do still have it. was going to return it or keep it for back-up, but if one of you local boys want it i can make you a deal i guess.

I traded my true watermelon to a friend in So Cal. I have the goldeneye (aquascenes) - its a really nice one, but that true watermelon really has no equal that I've seen yet. Anyhooo ...
I also really like the JBJ. I'm impressed that the 1/4 can easily handle my 210. I saw the Teco at a show and it seemed about the same as the JBJ. It seems like almost everything they put out is crap, except their chillers.

top off reservoir
flyingphish
09/22/2007, 06:19 PM
indeed it is, it holds about 4+ gallons of water. last about a week and a half...the doser feeds from it and onto the geo kalk reactor.
in addition, the stock water top off device that came with the "system" is also installed so as to supplement the top off. i.e. occasionally the Ph gets too high, acjr kills power to doser and no top off...thats when the stock top off device kicks in.
peace of mind...its a difficult thing to come by these days.

David, you might be looking at the golden/alien eye chalice on the right? from atlantis aquarium?
here is a real red watermelon from hugo...it sits on the left side above the toadstool...

you have a way with words hwg, thanks bud.
ed, yes, increase in growth in sps. montis more than acros. this superman i have is growing too fast if there is such a thing. and this blue polyp cap will need a trimming before it hits the glass. so better growth and even better color. didnt have this problem before.
before i changed lights i switched from kalk dosing to two part dosing. the alkalinity part has trace elements including Mg, my Mg has been spot on 1350 ever since. i gather the two part solution has helped with the colors and growth too...
bill, its 2 gmann actinics and 2 fiji purples.

Fly, Other than coral grouth I was just wondering what you really think about keeping SPS under the evo light in a system 70 since I dont know of anyone else who has done it?
flyingphish
02/20/2008, 12:19 AM
i think it is an excellent light for any application. just make sure to aquascape correctly to get the colors youll want, i.e. create different sections of elevation peaking around 6 inches from top. that way you can keep different sps at different light levels. e.g. oregon tort needed to be at top to stay blue, any lower it would brown out. as for caps they liked it lower down...birdsnest on the bottom no problem.
do a mixed reef. sps at top and middle. lps in middle and bottom. two vortechs near the top for good sps flow. evo or planet 6-9 inches above water. i tried to do sps only but i liked some of the lps corals so much i had to collect some of them. frogspawn for clownfish, kryptonite candy cane, war corals, acans, watermelons like bazooka joe and Red, hot pink yumas?! i mean how can you pass on those? the list goes on. so now i have a mixed sps dominated tank.

There's the update!
It's been a while.
Your tank is looking great!
You're a brave man Jason, I'm paranoid 24/7 even with the top on. ONE day I decided to leave the top off for few hours, I ended up losing my female rhomboid. :(
I just noticed that you have 2 VTs running, have you seen any significant changes in water quality after adding a second one?
flyingphish
05/01/2008, 12:08 AM
yeah...better clarity ive found since their isnt anywhere in the tank that something can get stuck. i have three vortechs all running 1/3-1/2 speed instead of one running at 100%. the third one is in the back bottom right corner sitting on the bottom pointed forward.
i may stick it to the bottom pointing straight up...but as it is now everything on the bottom gets sucked towards it anyway and keeps the bottom super clean.
ive always had a healthy tank, just not a colorful growing like mad tank....now i do. what made the biggest difference for me was going to bionic two part and 400w. the two part has all the trace elements in addition to Ca and Alk. ive tested for most trace minerals and they are spot on.
currently im running a litermeter3 with 3 pumps. Ca, Alk, and one on a deltec KM500 kalk reactor.
i also went back to my elos ns500 skimmer as i like it better than the atb. the atb (for sale) is just too big for the system 70.
one other thing. i bought a box of reefers best salt. ive been using aquacraft marine mix with no problems, just wanted to try something different. so far i like it better because it mixes easier. other than that it was probably money wasted.

Phishy moved up to a new 120xl and he sold the 70 to one of his friend's. I believe most of the coral, that I didn't steal from the 70, has gone into the new 120xl.

lets dust off this thread...
i have lost the "who can cure your liverock the longest" contest to Jesse.
oh the shame.
guess this means i get to add frags now.:bounce2:
the right half is from my 70. the left half is new and i shall tend to my flock now.
One thing i really must say is these new Elos 20K bulbs are really nice. Much bluer than the previous version, exactly to my likings.
here see for yourself:

Wow. Tank looks beautifull. Hopefully you will post more pictures soon :)
I’ve bought these bulbs myself, upgrading from the old 150W abyss. It’s been a week and a half since Jesse sent them, so they should arrive any day now.
You have two E-powers and nothing else in that picture, right? I love the color.

you will be a lot happier if you are looking for a bluer look. this shot was taken with an iphone4. mobile sensors always add blue for some reason. it is still pretty close.
i started a separate thread using pictures from a nikon slr and it adds amber. so its somewhere in between.
Nice. Somewhere between this pic and the others you posted sounds great.
If I saw my tank today when I started this hobby, I would not have gone for a bluer bulb. I must have gotten brainwashed the last year and a half looking at all the sweet blue US tanks online :)
Maybe the bulbs are waiting for me when I get home today. I’ve been thinking that for a week though :p
I am still a newbie in this hobby, and this will be my first bulb-change. Did you bother acclimating the corals to the new light in some way? Were you running the old Abyss bulbs when you changed to the new ones? I was thinking maybe I should run the E-power with the frosted glass for a week or two, but if it isn’t necessary I’d rather not do it.
Oh, and what kind of ballasts are you using?

I didnt acclimate and i was running the old abyss bulbs with ice cap ballast.
corals didnt seem to take notice
they do look better than before no doubt. today my tank is on fire.
Woohoo! Received mine today :D
Right now I am just waiting for the E-power to cool down.

Nice picture phish. Paal I believe you are officially the only man in europe with the US version Abyss;) When I switched from old abyss to the new, I had one birds nest bleach out, so I would raise them up or use the frosted glass just to be safe.
Holy blue! I did not expect it to be this different from the old Abyss. I tried taking a pic with my bad mobile phone, but all I got was a blue/purple blur :p I will throw in some updates in the “20k-thread” once I get a proper camera.
Has anyone done a par comparison between the two bulbs?
Hope you don’t mind me spamming your thread, flyingphish ;)
