I had a coral beauty in my 29 gallon, but had to get rid of it and I won't have one until I get my bigger tank.

And we all want to see yours!

I wouldn't suggest a flame in a nano but I did it for a month. One of the few additions I regret.

Cherubs are smaller but this guy was awfully aggressive.

Nope, no problems with him nipping at corals (I have SPS, LPS & Softies). He did nip at my firefish and my assesor.

liveaquaria.com lists several dwarf angels that would be suitable for aquariums of 25 gallons or more.

When I get back from vacation I'm going to try and put together a nano dwarf angel club.

Should it be called, 'nano dwarf angel club' or 'nano dwarf angel thread' ?

Can I join the club if I put some halos on top of my fish? :D ;)

Here's a shot of my Pygmy Angel right after I caught him to take him back to the store. He developed a taste for my Zoanthids.

Seemed like about a 50/50 chance of trouble w/corals, so I tried. I'm guessing that tank raised vs wild caught may have something to do w/wether or not there's any coral nipping. They're usually all aggressive toward smaller fish.

I have a buddy in my local reef club who's had a Pygmy in his 20L for 6-7 months now along w/a pair of clowns. He's had no issues at all. Just didn't work for me.

I think the chances of angels eating corals are a lot higher in nanos because there is only so much room, and the corals are always in their face.

I had an Eibli in my 24 but took him out for killing my Lobo :( I noticed much greater polyp extension on my SPS after taking him out as well.

So far I've been pretty lucky...

My Brazillian Flame Back angel has been a model citizen. In fact he only got a little beligerant once and putting a plexiglass divider in my 20 to separate him from the 2 clowns has stopped his rampage. After a couple of days I took out he divider, and he's great! I love him.

My Brazillian FB angel hasn't even picked at anything in mine. I have zoas, SPS, shrooms, and xenia and clove polyps. Come to think of it, he did nip at the xenia, but never with any gusto. He's been a great little fish.

I will post pics eventually, right now I'm in the middle of a move from Tucson to Utah, and then from Utah to Northern Wyoming. But the tanks comming with me!

I have an african flameback in my 30 gallon cube. He nips frequently at my favia septa frag but I don't have much else in there to interest him (zoas, shrooms, featherduster, palys).

I've been told by a marine biologist that 30 gallons is too small for him even though vendors like LiveAquaria say 30 gallons is fine. So I worry....I can't catch the lil bugger though to put him in my other tank because he is WAY to smart and too fast.

What is the best recommendation? Add dwarf angel first or corals first?

reefman13
08/24/2007, 08:02 PM
corals definitely, other wise they are much more of a temptation, like "oh, look, he's feeding me"

I've had him for over a year, maybe even closer to two years. He's doing great. He's in a tank with mushrooms, Zoas, star polyps, two types of stoneys, and an LPS. I'm sorry, I don'tknow the exact species. Oh and a xenia too. He's never bothered anything. He only picks at the green algea, he's a great little grazer.

Cheers!

I'm not real sure on the Flameback, but I think they're from Brazil.

There are essentially three kinds of pygmies that look similar, Check out this month's reefkeeping magazine on the RC home page for a really good description.
1. Brazillian flameback, distinguished by the yellow extending the entire length of the back but tail is blue.
2. African flameback, yellow extending down the back and the tail is yellow.
3. Cherub, Yellow only on the face area.

Hope this helps, sorry, I don't have experience with 2 and 3 but the brazillian has been great. I do love the guy, swims well and is not shy.

And yes he's doing great in a 20H.

Okay, well I'm giving up on this thread. As it turns out, dwarf angels are too unpredictable in the reef safe category. I'm thinking my other fish may be a sixline.

we're looking at getting a mulitbarred...if he eats the corals so be it, at least he'll be eating. i'd wait for the larger set up, but i found a great specimen and am not sure if i can pass them up. it's rare enough to see them, it's even more rare to see them healthy and eating.

Does anyone have a Resplendent Angel?

Subliminal
09/24/2007, 08:41 AM
I just bought an African Flameback a few weeks ago.

He went through a rigorous 8 day, 4 tank QT regiment, and then into my 29g.

My 29g contains:

2 percs in a BTA
2 chromies
Scooter Blenny
Urchin
Seahare
Emerald Crab
Cleaner Shrimp
Nassarius Snails
Hermits
SPS,LPS,Softies
Halimedia
60 lbs of rock
40 lbs of sand

So far he's really only bothered the chromies, but then they're chromies, so who cares. I think he's just establishing dominance, anyhow.

He's a little bigger than the percs, but the BTA they live in is pretty big, so he steers clear.

He's only been in a week, but hasn't bothered any corals yet. Even if he does, I don't know how I'd ever get him out again, so I'll just have to not get that kind of coral again. ;)

I don't have a pic of him in the tank yet, but here's the day before he went in:

What corals has anyone kept successfully with dwarf angels in nanos?

Saltwaterstart
01/28/2008, 09:44 PM
Right now, everything but SPS and clams (insufficient lighting).

The only thing I've seen my CB angel nip at would be my bubble coral, and it actually died because of it. That was before I put in the algae clips though. Now he hangs around there and doesn't even pay attention to the other bubble like specimens I keep.

It will depend on the angel. Some will go insane for softies, but not even recognize what a hard coral is. Some will do the opposite and go for the hard ones, and some will not go for anything at all, and prefer meat to anything. That makes it bad for anyone who has a meat coral.

Spirulina sheets, and nori really do wonders. My LMB ends up getting whatever the angel doesn't touch, but they do okay when sharing. The brand is Yaki Sushi Nori Sushihane. It says roasted and salted, but the salt comes in a different package.

Come to think of it, a lot of fish in my aquarium are eating differently. I actually hooked my longnose hawkfish onto formula 2 flakes. He still eats plankton, but not as much as the flakes.
