I just saw this snail coming out of my rocks. I tried to grab it when I was done with the pictures but it was pretty fast and snuck back in before I could peel it from the rock. Anyone know what type it is? (The small one in the middle, not the Astrea) Thanks!

From the sideview it looks like a stomatella. If so, it is beneficial.

Yep, speedy is the trademark for Stomatella snails. The most common species in reef tanks seem to be Stomatella impertusa and Stomatella varia (which are very similar). I may be tricked by the photo angle, but the anterior edge of your snail's shell looks overly broad for those species. If it's neither of those I mentioned, it's either Stomatella planata or one of the other, broader, species in the genus. It should be a nice guy in your tank.

I hope the snail in the background (near the top) of your second pic is housing a hermit crab, he's NOT a nice guy.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks guys. Its the first time I have seen a snail like this. The shell in the second picture is an empty extra for my crabs. Thanks for looking out for me though!

If you see one, you'll usually see many more in time. They very frequently reproduce in aquariums. Give them away to your friends, they'll love you for it. I've never seen these guys for sale, so it's always really nice to get one as a hitchhiker.

He's not kidding my friends know I love them so they always send some my way when they find them!
