I have been out of the hobby for the last four or five years. Have there been any notable advances to the hobby over this period of time?

T5 lights are competing head to head with metal halide lights now.

Ideas on Filtration have changed a little bit, and it seems like people are doing water changes less frequently because of it.

These may have been around longer, but are becoming more mainstream nowadays:

Elos Tanks (high end, high quality stuff)
Nitrate reactors
Cooking rock (heat not used despite the term)
Amino Acids
T5 lighting (as mentioned above)
LED Lighting
Magnetic filters (absolutely WORTHLESS; this technology somehow made it's way from a gas saver to a reef filter and does neither.)

I think Controllers have become better and a bit more sophisticated lately as well.

I would also like to learn more about T5 lighting, cooking rock, Nitrate reactors, new controllers and the rest - is there a forum that discusses this type of information or is this the best forum for this type of discussion?

I have a lot to learn, thanks for the feedback!

One of the best things to do is to become a paying member to this site which will allow you to use the search function without having to wait until 2 o'clock in the morning. It's a whopping $24; the cost of a book. It will pay for itself in no time at all.

You can use the google search of this site, under "search tools" on the home page, it works all the time.

Waterkeeper has digressed more and more over those 4-5 years and now exists solely by an IV of Ensure.
