I am about to build the randystacye 6" needle wheel skimmer. http://randystacye.com/diy_needle_wheel_skimmer.htm

Has has anyone made any adjustments or changes that have improved the performance of this skimmer. I did notice Randy said he was going to use a second gen-x 2400 for recirc. did this ever happen and how did it work. Pics would help also. I would like to incorporate any mod.'s that may improve it. Thanks.

That skimmer plan is still very good and many skimmers are still made up of the same body design. The one improvement would be doing a mesh mod to the impeller. A Gen-x 2400 on that body with a mesh mod would kick butt.

thanks andrew any good threads on the mesh mod that you are thinking of? I found one on a CSS 220 that used fishing line on an existing needle wheel.

Here's the original thread:

What size (water volume/stocking level) system do people think this skimmer could handle with the mesh modded 2400?

well it's modeled after the Euro-Reef CS 135 without the meshmod. so there's a start.

I saw that on Randy's site. However, I have become somewhat untrusting of vendor claims about what size systems their skimmers can handle.

Having said that, I feel pretty comportable building one with the meshmod to use on my 120. I hate the noise and maintenance requried of my beckett.

i think it would be fine on a 120 I'm going to do it on a 75. a bit bigger than needed but bigger is better I always say.
