So my CustomSeaLife fan (bulbs work fine) finally went kaput and isn't turning on anymore after 4 years of service, the 2 65W bulbs need replacing and I've had the itch to possibly try new lighting for a couple years so I figured now is a good time! I'm interested in T5 setups but have some conditions for my tank setup and I hope that I'll be able to get some good advice here on where to go next.

-29 Gallon reef, some SPS/LPS, and softies (no clams)
-Acrylic tank so it's retains heat well (overheating is a concern, but the 130W PC hood was fine with the fan)
-Don't want a suspended hood, mounting legs only please
-Don't want MH because I don't want to deal with the extras needed (ie. chiller)

I've been hoping to find a T5 hood setup that would be good for me, if not I will be OK with doing PCs again... What I'm looking for in the hood/bulbs are:

-Low cost setup (not cheap quality, but I don't need top o' the line stuff), am comfortable with $200ish
-Bulbs give good color (for my green, orange, and purple/blue corals)
-Low cost in long run (PC bulbs need to be changed about 2x/year (that was costing me about $110 extra a year for my PC hood)

I don't believe this CSL hood is supposed to run w/out a fan, and I was going to change the fan out, but the only other fan I had was DC and not AC... still I'd rather just get a different setup.

EDIT:
I've been perusing the HUGE T5 thread (and all it's splits) but I fear that I'll need a new lighting setup before I finish reading that thread in 2010.

lol. Yes it is long, but I'd go with T-5's. There is another thread a while back called show me your T-5 sps tanks only. So you can have just about anything you want. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1083336 this thread is quite a bit shorter with some great tanks. =)

Thanks for the reply MarineGirl411, I really want to go T5.

So far I'm looking at some of these options, and am wondering if anyone has experience with any of them. Or if any of you have better ideas for around the same price (I really don't want to go over $250)

1. HelloLights 24" 4 Lamp T5 (http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1413)

2. Aqua Medic Ocean Light T5 (4 or 6 bulb) (http://www.saltycritter.com/lighting/aqua-medic/ocean-light-t5-only.htm)

3. Teklight T5 Lighting Fixture (4 bulb) (http://www.globeaqua.com/teklight_lighting.html)

I have a 29 gal also. I am going to buy 2 ice cap SLR reflectors and 2 t5 for about $100 with end caps and such. I am going to retrofit them into the PC fixture I have now. I think it will be enough. I am going to overdrive them with an Advance balast for a fraction of the price of the Ice Cap. The PC fixture has a fan so I don't need to worry about overheating. I figured it will use about the same wattage (65w) and get at least double the par with the individual reflectors and over driven bulbs. Over two years or so it will cost me less because of the 6 month replacements for PCs plus I get double the light. I will see what happens. I am starting to think PCs are over rated.:D
