I think it is a pacific sailfin tang(Zebrasoma veliferum).

I think it is a pacific sailfin tang(Zebrasoma veliferum).

Its an Indo Pac model alright, the Red Sea (Desjardin's) sailfin doesn't have the yellow tail.

This is why I am confused... I looked both of them up and both types come up as Desjardini

Bob Fenner told me that for all practical purposes the Indo Pac sailfin and the Desjardini sailfin are genetically identical and they the differences in appearance are localized color variations. The Desjardini sailfin come from the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and the veliferum sailfin comes from the Indo Pacific region. The tail is the easiest way the tell the difference. The veliferum's tail is yellow and the Desjardini's tail is usually grey and usually has spots on it. The body stripes on the veliferum are more distinct and are basically black and white, the Desjardini body stripes are more numerous, less distinct and have a lots more colors and spots including yellows in them. That first picture of the juvenile with the bangaii cardinals definately looks like a veliferum sailfin and was identical to one I recently owned. Here is a pic of him all grown up.
