Ever since we moved to a new city, our tanks have went through algae phases. I use a four stage RO/DI & change the filters when needed. I always get 0 TDS, but the algae won't go away. It's mostly Hair Alage & cyanobacteria. I have went through all the other things I could think of such as overfeeding, old light bulbs, water flow, etc. I have even changed salt mixes many times thinking this was the problem. Does 0 TDS always mean pure water? I even have a water report from the city, but have no clue what it means. Any suggestions on different water filters I could try? Thanks.

I looked at your water report also and I don't think it's your water. BUT you do have chloramines and you would benifit by converting to a two stage carbon filter system by adding a housing and using chloramine filter sets. I have great confidence in tds meters and trust the zero reading, however leaving exhausted resin in can be a big mistake with chloramines.

Can chloramines casue algae outbreaks? Do I add this two stage system in addition to what I have?

All you add is a single housing see the attached drawing. Cyno is generally a condition of low water flow. Exhausted DI can lead to an outbreak of hair algae and the algae can be hard to get a handle on once it starts. Algae doesn't take much fuel to keep it going.

If the algae is a big problem you may want to add a small Foxface. They are the best algae eater you can get and will eat any algae even tangs won't touch. They do get large so a small one is best.

The tank with the cyano has a ton of flow and the tank with the hair algae has it just in the refugium. I should have been more clear. Is it ok if I give you a call to discuss the options? Thanks.

Yes give me a call and hair algae in the refugium is no big deal as long as it stays contained. Refugiums can be a real mess and the main tank prestine.

As far as the cyano a few large mexican turbos will clean that up.

Randy1 your municipal gov page is very poor and does not provide a link to your water quality report. You will have to call your municipal water supplier for the report and it is required to be online I just can't find it.

Search on google. Input: water quality report [name of your city] and it should come up as a pdf file.

That doesn't always work but in this case it's at the bottom of the first page water quality pdf for Lorain.

I ran water quality report lorain oh on google and it is at the bottom of the first page. In most cases I run the city and state name and find it under city gov water quality report but lorains page is not good or searchable.

Randy1 I think I located the link to your water quality report I just wasn't thinking. I backtracked from the google page to what looks like your water supplier depending on which water district your in. All districts use chlorine as a disinfectant which is easy to filter.
