can you run a 55 gallon on just a large skimmer, live rock and sand?

Yes, i have one with remora pro and 60lb. of live rock. Its been going for 2years without any problems.

Many people do it. Just make sure the skimmer will be able to hand your bio-load and has a good rating. :)
