I want to start a 25 gallon aquarium and probably upgrade o a 55 or 75 gallon later.

So I was wondering what skimmer I should get, is there a skimmer that is good for both sizes, or will I need to buy two separate ones. I will need a HOB skimmer because I will not be able to have a sump, and one that is quiet.
Would a skimmer that is good for a 55-75 gallon ( not just the company's size reccomendation) be too powerful for a 25 gallon?
I want to use live rock and a skimmer for filtration, and probably have some macro algae.

So what skimmers would be good and should I buy 2 separate ones?

the tunze nano is for 10-52 gallons, 10 heavily stocked and 52 low stocked. If your 55 has a low bio-load (not many fish) then go with a tunze nano. Or maybe try an aquac remora for your 25 gallon using a maxi-jet 1200 and when you upgrade tanks, upgrade the pump, say if you have a 55 gallon use a mag-drive 3 or 5.

since your new to the hobby I wouldnt use a skimmer on a nano (less than 30g) it will do more harm than good!

You cannot go wrong with an H&S skimmer. THe 110F2000 will work nicely on a 75 gal reef.

Actually i would say otherwise, the skimmer may help with his beginner mistakes. Maybe overfeeding, something died and he didnt notice etc. I think nano skimmers are more for beginners

But lets not start a skimmer vs no skimmer thread, there are already some.

i'd have to agree with musho. newbies will realize more benefit from a skimmer even on a small tank as it helps them smooth the bumps in the road.

Seahorsie - buy a good skimmer of a trusted brand so that you can use it when you upgrade to a larger tank. YOu will not regret buying an H&S, Deltec, etc.

if you have a sump and the cash a DAS ex-1 would be great or an octopus nw200, if not get an odyssea ps75 hob (aquatraders.com) for cheap and be happy. For your 55 you could simply get a second one or get a sump and a ps160.......the less expensive route, not as good as the DAS or Octopus, but much less costly and still decent. By the way I would not use the ps160 HOB....leaky.

Urchin pro would carry you moderately stocked in a 55, but go to an Aqua C EV 120 if heavy stocked, huge difference there.
